Researchers from the University of Buffalo did a study and found that sexualized images causes negative consequences for both sexes (Nauert, 2011). The method of the study involved using covers of the magazine, Rolling Stones from years 1967 through 2009. The researchers measured how the trends in the sexualization of men and women in popular media changed over time. The finding were that both men and women were hypersexualized but women were sexualized a lot more than men over a 43 year time frame (Hatter & Trautner, 2011).

Advertisements of things such as condoms and Viagra are advertised during the time children and teens are watching television. They should not be exposed to this type of thing but it is hard for parents to regulate it because they are aired on so many channels. In addition to advertisements being aired at the wrong times, some companies use sex to sell products that are very irrelevant to sex. Research shows that it encourages sexism, discourages girls from pursuing careers in science, math, and technology, and it increases sexual harassment, sexual violence and the demand for child pornography (McCarthy, 2008). Sex portrayal is unrealistic and can cause negative misconceptions about sex and sexuality. All of these outcomes are negative outcomes that could be prevented it sexual content in the media decreased. A 2007 report from the American Psychological Association stated that sexualization can cause emotional problems in young girls and women because it makes them see themselves negatively (McCarthy, 2008). This type of reaction could result into disorders such as eating disorders, low self-esteem, and
