The City Of Troy In The Liad Or The Odyssey

The city of Troy was a rich and powerful city. The Trojans controlled much land and were able to trade with many people around them. However they were not always rich, so how did they get to be? There are many poets who take hymns and descriptions of storytellers to give us the history of Troy in The lliad or The Odyssey, but non-are quite sure of how the city really started. The city of Troy was located on the northwest coast of what we call today, Turkey. There was no set Troy in the beginning; whenever one city was destroyed a new one would be built on top of it. Whether that destruction was from the causes of fires or other natural destructions, or invaders that had attacked them. Some of the people would move to a new country to start …show more content…
“There was at least ten ‘Troy’s’, no single City of Troy, laying on top of each other.” Writes researcher Gret Jan Van of the University of Amsterdam. The Greeks who made Troy into the city we know today finally founded it in 2920 B.C. and from there it took off.
What is the story of the Trojan horse? It is a very well known story around the world. However, do you know why it took place? Some believe it was just a myth, a fun story to be passed down from generation to generation. What then caused the Spartans, or Greeks, to build a huge hollow horse to hide in? According to the Homers writing, the war started with the capture of Helen, the wife of Menelaus, king of Sparta. They demanded that she be returned to them but the Trojans refused. Some believe, however that this could be a legend or story. An archeologist named Heinrich Schliemann conducted excavations in Turkey, where Troy would have been, and suggested that stories of Troy that we know today were based on real cities, events, and people. The Greeks began looking for ways to break into the city for about ten years, causing a long lasting war between them with no winner.

In order to prove that Troy, the ancient city in Homer's Iliad, was true, an amateur German archeologist named Heinrich Schliemann excavated a hill, Hissarlik, in, back then, the Ottoman Empire, in the year 1871. He found which is believed to be Troy, and several other cities from the Bronze Age to the Roman period. And either on or about May 27, 1873, Schliemann reported, "In excavating this wall further and directly by the side of the palace of King Priam, I came upon a large copper article of the most remarkable form, which attracted my attention all the more as I thought I saw gold behind it. In order to withdraw the treasure from the greed of my workmen, and to save it for archaeology, …I immediately had "paidos" (lunch break) called. ….While the men were eating and resting, I cut out the treasure with a large knife….…

With the help of the goddess Minerva and her superhuman skills, the Greeks build an enormous wooden horse to gift the Trojans. Many great armed Greek soldiers hide within the horse and the rest of the Greeks flee Troy and hide behind an island. Trojans believe they won the war and contemplate to bring the giant wooden horse within their wall. Some Trojans believe brining the horse inside Troy is not a good idea. For example, a priest named Laocoon disagrees with this decision and tries to convince Trojans that it’s a trick from the Greeks and to not trust the horse.…

Trying to date the events of Greek myth is a problem, not least because the events didn’t happen, at least not in the form they’ve come down to us. But the closest thing to a date we can point to in Greek myth is the Trojan War” (Aelarsen). Just because Troy actually existed, doesn’t mean that the Trojan War actually happened. There is yet to be proof of its occurrence. Also, it appears that the film is “confused about historical chronology” (Aelarsen).…

Throughout history “The Truth behind Troy” has been documented and talked about for many centuries. In my opinion most of the research and scholarly evidence of Hisarlik clearly shows that our current knowledge of the famous ancient city of Troy is based on Homer’s writings and archaeological discoveries made by the German archaeologist and excavator Heinrich Schliemann. Many have agreed that Homer should be acknowledged as a legitimate source of historical reference and therefore, so should Schliemann. It is widely assumed the real reason for the Trojan War was due to the desire to dominate the trade industry by controlling the trade from Asia into the Aegean Sea. Scholars claim that the trade from Asia had to travel through Troy, which in turn gave the city its wealth and significance.…

In the article, "The Real Troy," the author, Josh Fischman, states that while not all Trojan myths maintain historical accuracy, most contain some elements of truth. The author cites instances in the Iliad and The Odyssey that archeologists are now finding might be historically relevant. In the article, Fischman quotes Manfred Korfmann saying, "The town makes Troy about 15 times larger than previously thought." (Fischman 56) In this statement, Korfmann is describing the discoveries that had been made from the excavations near the Citadel Wall. These findings expanded the area that was thought to be Troy.…

In his Histories, Herodotus soon makes it clear to us that this is a collection of peoples’ opinions on what happened, which is at least as important as a true account of precisely what really happened: “The Persians claim that this is how it happened, and they find in the sack of Troy the origin of their hostility toward the Hellenes. But the Phoenicians disagree with the Persians about Io. … These are the stories told by the Persians and the Phoenicians. I myself have no intention of affirming that these events occurred thus or otherwise.” (Histories, 1.6)…

Black Ships Before Troy, which is the adapted version of the Iliad, takes place in 750 BC, in the ancient city of Troy. Detail and evidence from this book shows us that the Trojans and Greeks believed in many gods, worshiping all of them and hoping to be helped when it is needed. When the Trojan war started the gods played a large role in deciding the victor. The gods would choose sides and help in ways like sending bad omens, putting hope into tired warriors, and sometimes helping a mortal escape death. Fate and destiny were strongly believed by the Trojans and Greeks.…
