1. A leader is a matter of subjectivity as whom one defines a leader is unique to them. Everyone looks for unique characteristics that they would use to define a leader. Either personality traits, their actions, the way they are able to speak and mesmerize a crowd with their words, or a combination of characteristics not listed. To this notion there are leaders all around us, parents, teachers, friends, that may not be highly recognized, but to someone they are respected as a leader. It is more common in today’s society to recognize leaders that were once with us, historical figures such as ex-presidents, rights-leaders, or those who lead great battles. Another trait that can be seen in our everyday lives is selflessness. Selflessness is the concern of others needs and wishes before one’s own. Selflessness can be observed in various actions such as helping the poor and homeless, or holding the door open for a stranger. A leader without selflessness is not a true leader. Selflessness is needed in leadership because a true leader looks out for the wellbeing of their people. A leader looks after their own before they manage their own issues. This can be seen in historical moments were leaders have sacrificed everything, including themselves in order for their people to achieve a goal or something momentous. Many of these events can be found in historical books and some can be found through the stories of the survivors who lived because of these great acts of …show more content…
Like Martin Luther King Jr. demonstrated, these characteristics are without a doubt the most important qualities of an outstanding leader. Without these traits a leader wouldn’t be able to accomplish any goals that required effort, motivation, patience, or time. It would be like the saying, “A ship without a captain,” the leader would not be able to accomplish anything without perseverance. A leader deprived of selflessness is a leader of nothing and no one, as that leader would not have any followers or supporters.
