Another trait that can be seen in our everyday lives is selflessness. Selflessness is the concern of others needs and wishes before one’s own. Selflessness can be observed in various actions such as helping the poor and homeless, or holding the door open for a stranger. A leader without selflessness is not a true leader. Selflessness is needed in leadership because a true leader looks out for the wellbeing of their people. A leader looks after their own before they manage their own issues. This can be seen in historical moments were leaders have sacrificed everything, including themselves in order for their people to achieve a goal or something momentous. Like Martin Luther King Jr. demonstrated, these characteristics are without a doubt the most important qualities of an outstanding leader. Without these traits a leader wouldn’t be able to accomplish any goals that required effort, motivation, patience, or time. It would be like the saying, “A ship without a captain,” the leader would not be able to accomplish anything without perseverance.
