Culture in Islam

What is Culture?
Culture is the ‘way of life’ for a particular group of people, defined by everything form language, religion, cuisine, social habits, music and arts that are learned through a process of socialization from one generation to the next. Cultures have shared behavioural patterns that help distinguish one culture group from another culture group. Every country has similar cultures even though they might have different religions. For example, an array of people who share the same language will believe in different religions but the language aspect keeps them in the same culture. Culture is not something that is innate. Therefore, Islamic culture has been taught to every Muslim through its bases. There are many characteristics of Islamic culture. Islamic culture is based on the Qur’an and the Sunnah (Ahadis) but it is also based on human experience and learning. Learning things from other cultures is encouraged in Islam as it allows Muslims to progress and improve Islamic culture. However, the teachings of other cultures should not contradict the Qur’an and Sunnah or the previous teachings taught by Muslims of high stature in the earlier times. So, wherever we live in the world, we should not forget the features of our Islamic culture. Islam upholds strict monotheism known as Tawheed in the Arabic language. Muslims believe in Divine guidance that was sent to them through many prophets and messengers (peace be upon them) and mainly through the final prophet Mohammed (SAW). Muslims believe in life after death and in the Day of Reckoning.
