Also as they were looking they found pieces of the astronauts that were on the shuttle. Later on they figured out that some of the astronauts didn’t die in the explosion. They died from drowning in the ocean.
There was a 7 man crew on the Challenger that day. Many of their family members were in the crowd. The people on the Challenger were 5 NASA astronauts and 2 payload specialists. A man named Francis Richard Scobee or known as Dick Scobee was the commander of the Challenger. He also was an engineer. He was born on May 19, 1939. When he was little he loved looking up to see a plane fly by. He was fascinated with them. After graduating high school Scobee joined the Air Force and became a reciprocating engine mechanic in 1957. The Challenger was his first shuttle that he ever was the commander of. He was very excited to get that opportunity. He once quoted, “When you find something you really like to do, and your willing to risk the consequences of that, you really probably out to go do it.” That’s why he decided to do this mission.
