The benefit to having results posted provides feedback to the team on the success of their efforts. Teams not reaching their goals would learn from others and begin to strategize on how to improve their results. The following study was reported using supportive curriculum with heart rate monitors (HRM) and pedometers (PED) and their effect on physical activity. The results proved quantitatively. Qualitatively, as well, the teacher felt the PEDs provided the students motivation for self-improvement during class. The students using the HRM shared that although time consuming to set up, it was good to be able to see how hard they were working (Chapman, Sullivan & Ciccomascolo, 2015) Set up time for the majority of my students would be minimal during the study as they own and carry their smartphones already. This supports a greater motivation to reach a higher level of physical activity with the use of the students’ own tracking devices.
The administration of the study by the team leaders collecting and retrieving the step counts or resolving technology issues will increase on-task behaviors though student self-management of their technology. As early as five years ago, Dickerson & Schrad (2010) shared this success from …show more content…
The accessibility of the students’ personal devices and the ease at which they navigate through most applications excites the possibilities for their learning. When smartphones are present student engagement heightens and “small group” no longer has a stigma as the students now consider it “collaboration.” These are aspects of the real-world that education can embrace to best prepare students.
I plan to integrate this smartphone tracking technology into my eighth grade classroom. The benefit of having students who own, carry, and consider the smartphone to be their “lifeline” is a benefit as the device is present and their training is minimal. The role and purpose will change for the students and their smartphones--both will be engaged and productive components toward reaching their set goals. My goal is to not only help the students understand the benefits of tracking technology but also the process by which their combined efforts establish and reach goals.
The strategies identified expose students to tracking their in-class steps and recording their energy intake and expenditure for several days on their personal devices. Hopefully, using the
