The “Golden Age” of Sports for Women
The 1920’s, which was also referred to as the roaring era, was a time period where entertainment, partying and generally having fun was at its peak. A favourite pastime for women besides partying and having fun was to play sports competitively. When women played sports they were as competitive as the men who played sports, and playing sports was physical fun for women. Due to technological advancements, women had an abundance of free time; with this time on their hands, women found themselves playing sports competitively making the 1920’s a “Golden Age” of sports for women. This time period had long term effects on women in a positive way. The creation of female sports teams during the 1920’s grant us to still practice this today and allow female athletes to work together on a team to win competitive games. Tournaments that women can participate in today and the wide variety of tournaments are all possible because of how tournaments for women during the 1920’s began to become more and more accepted in the community. The Olympic Games during the roaring era grant women the ability to engage in today’s Olympic Games. This too enabled woman to take part and compete in more events in current day Olympics like Women’s foil which is fencing in the Olympic Games (refer to Appendix C). The Olympic Games crafted many female Olympians that are very successful and have many accomplishments. One successful female during the Olympic Games is Ethel Catherwood, who is a high jumper that achieved a gold medal in 1928. Women in today’s world are recognized for their individual accomplishments in sports thanks to women in the 1920’s. Young women that attend college and university have the opportunity to take part in varsity teams due to the 20’s (refer to Appendix D). “The National Amateur and Athletic Association Federation (NAAF) are committed to boys and girls being equal with boys and girls being on an equal footing with the same standards, the same program, the same rulings and the same regulations.” One may say that the NAAF allowed women to play more aggressively like the men who played sports at the time. The NAAF showed that women are tough competitors and it shows that women are as competitive as men who played sports because both genders played with the same standards, program, rules and regulations. In 1920, The Dick-Kerr’s Ladies Professional Soccer Team conquered their male opponents 35-34 in a competitive game (refer to Appendix E). This demonstrates that women can be just as competitive as men in sports under the same rulings and regulations as the men and even outscore them in a game. Women proved they can be on the same playing level as men in the sports
