Teleological Arguments for the Existence of God
A teleological argument is one of the most popular arguments of the existence of God. It bases the proof of the existence of God on the order and design of nature, or the structure of the universe. The universe didn’t just happen by chance and there is a purpose or goal. It is a causal argument and focus on modern ideas. There are several types of teleological arguments presented for Gods existence that include analogical, anthropic, and intelligent design. Just as there are arguments for the existence of God, there are also those against God. In this paper I will present a few.
An analogy compares two things for the purpose of explanation. An analogical argument makes an analogy between human design and nature to prove that there must be a designer. It states that objects in nature resemble manmade objects in relevant ways. Similar effects have similar causes. For example, a fiat and a Prius has are energy efficient and are made up of the same components, so they are made by a car designer. Just as manmade objects were created deliberately by a human designer, nature has relevance because it was designed by …show more content…
He uses the analogy of a watch being analogous to the universe. He begins by telling a story about if he stumble upon a stone people would wonder why the stone was there because there’s nothing intriguing about its components; However if you came across a watch you would wonder how it was designed and for what purpose. He describes a watch and all the components that are put together to make it work, or its design making properties. Just as the watch has design making properties with a purpose and isn’t just by random, so are some parts of nature. They are made by intention so intention exists, furthermore a designer
