The movie, 10 Things I Hate About You, and the play, Taming of the Shrew, are based on the same basic plot but the movie is more modernized. There are two sisters, Katarina and Bianca. Katarina is tough, unpleasant, and unlikable. However, everyone loves Bianca. Men constantly try to win Bianca's love, but she is not allowed to have a date until Kat does, but no one wants to have anything to do with her. Finally, someone gets Kat's attention, which allows Bianca to date. Though the basic plots of these stories are the same, there are many differences as well.
One of the main differences would be the play was written in the 16th century and the movie was shot in 1999. With them being five century’s apart it is obvious that the humor and culture portrayed would differ. The language spoken in the play was Elizabethan English and in the movie it was modern English. The setting of the play was in Padua, Italy and as for the movie it was at Padua High School in Seattle, Washington. Katherine is presented at the outset to be extremely cross, always arguing with everyone. Although she is beautiful, she is stubborn and loathsome. She rejects her womanly duties and refuses to take a husband. However Bianca is considered a goddess to all of the men who see or meet her, and is envied by women everywhere. In both mediums the man chosen to woo Kat was bribed with money or her dowry. The characters and settings names are modernized English names. An example would be in the play two of the main characters are Katherine and Petrucio, but in the movie the same characters portrayed names are Kat and Patrick. In both the play and the movie it ends perfectly for Bianca because she gets to be with her soul mate even though she had no clue it was really him the whole
