The Diary of Anne Frank Compare/Contrast Essay
The Diary of Anne Frank is a story about a 13 year old girl who lived during the holocaust. Her and her family were Jewish and were forced into hiding. They along with 4 other people hid in the attic above Mr. Frank’s office, called the “annex”. The Franks, the Van Daans, and Mr. Dussel lived there for two years without stepping outside and relying on Miep and Mr. Kraler to bring them basic supplies, food, and information about the world. This story is mainly depressing and intense throughout the events. In the two forms of The Diary of Anne Frank, the movie and the play, there are many characteristics the share and many they contrast.
There are three main similarities between the movie and play version. One of these is how each character is portrayed throughout the movie and the play. For example, Anne acts more outgoing and talkative in both versions. Anne shows this during the celebration of Hanukkah with the people in the annex. One of these differences is that in the movie, the man who helps them get food is Mr. Koogler, while in the play, his name is Mr. Kraler. In the play, his character name is Mr. Kraler, but in the movie he is called Mr. Koogler. Another difference is when Anne receives her diary. In the movie, she receives it as a present for her 13th birthday, while in the play, she gets it after they’ve moved into the annex. The last difference is that in the movie, Mr. Koogler stays healthy throughout the story, but in the play, Mr. Kraler goes to the hospital. This is due to an ulcer that has formed from the stress of keeping the annex a secret.
