Ballet is not often recognized as one of the world’s most demanding jobs, when indeed it is. Dance in general is ranked by The Business Insider as America’s #1 most physically demanding job, with choreographers at #14. Dance beats out fitness trainers, Iron workers, athletes and sports competitors, and even Forest Firefighters. Their job does not pay very well. Most ballet dancers have to work other jobs in order to pay for their bills, and house, and groceries, and anything else that they might need to live. If the dancers don’t belong to a major company, they have to buy their own shoes as well, which adds up really fast. With an interview with dancer Miko Fogarty, she and her mom Satoko talk about the cost of her ballet. Satoko says “ This costume is like $2,000, which is normal. Then I need like six tutus, which is $12,000.” Miko says “ My pointe shoes are around $90-100 and I have about two or three a month.” says Miko. “$35,000 for tuition, which includes class and private lessons almost six days a week. $35,000 a year.
