It started out as a dance used at balls and social gatherings. Ballet was the acceptable way and proper etiquette at these social gatherings. There were a lot of rules that went along with it, such as when and how to bow, step, and the distance from the king. Ballet expanded when these balls and social gatherings became more extravagant so did the dance, there were more elaborate steps, moves, and techniques added. After a while the dance became more theatrical and more of a performance on a stage with sets and a story line. Louis XIV was trained in ballet starting during his childhood. When he was fifteen years old Louis played in a ballet as Apollo the sun god. Louis ended up playing in eighty major roles in many different ballets, as many different characters. Although Louis XIV was a very skilled dancer his main contribution to Ballet was when he founded the Royal Academy of Dance in 1661. After opening the Royal Academy of Dance Louis XIV appointed Pierre Beauchamp as his personal ballet master. Beauchamp defined the five main positions in ballet that are still used today. After the opening of the Royal Academy of Dance another dance academy was opened in France in 1669 called the Paris Opera Ballet and is known today as the oldest ballet company in the world. Later on ballet in France was not as popular, but it moved on to other countries such as Russia. Today some of the best ballet dancers come from

In “A Dance through the Ages,” a practicum performance focusing on various social and courtly dances throughout many generations, two distinct sections of the dance are evident: a montage of more formal, courtly dances and a montage of more fun, racy social dances. These two distinct categories are meant to represent a chronologically accurate record while also providing the audience with a glimpse at the evolution of formality in dance. Beginning with the Pavane, the dance progresses to the Minuet and eventually to a nineteenth century Waltz. After a quick break in the music, the performance provides a glimpse of Swing, Disco, and social hip hop dances of today. Although the overall performance intends to depict the progressing decrease in formality over time, a dance historian would immediately point out that one of these dances is incorrectly placed into the “formal” category—the nineteenth century Waltz.…

The book that I have chosen to personally read for this class is called “The Dance Experience: Insights into History, Culture and Creativity” written by Myron Howard Nadel. I have been dancing in classes and recitals since I was three years old, and still continue to dance today. I love dancing because it is fun; it helps to relieve stress and allows any individual to use creativity in a diverse, moderate and entertaining way. I particularly chose this book because I wanted to go more in depth on how dance originated and also learn about all the different types of dance present throughout the world today. Each week in reading was dedicated to a different genre of dance that constituted new meanings and contributions to the dance culture.…

To illustrate, Peter the Great hired Swedish ballet instructors to train his own militia (Miller). This case in point shows how political leaders have been looking to ballet for their own gain since the 1600’s. This political domination of cultural art forms also occurred in the early stage of the Cold War. Russia in the 20th century considered ballet to be its jewel—especially following the USSR new political position. However, Russia wasn 't the only home of the ethereal movement.…

Ballet was passed down for a few generations in Liriana's family line. For the tradition to continue, they passed it down to Liriana by the time she was able to walk. Although her mother was kind and supportive, it did not stop her from giving Liriana tiresome and strict training. After those few years of harsh training, she knew how to perform on the dance floors with grace. In her later years when she was about 8 years old, her parents let her have a little bit of freedom because of how well she was when doing ballet.…

Fear and immaturity were once snags that prevented me from committing to a professional path in the allied health. It plagued and produced gaffes during my undergraduate studies at Stony Brook University which then led me to put the desire on hold. In hindsight, it was the best decision because discovering and developing myself as a person was necessary before achieving any kind of future success. After college, I entered a Master’s program in Statistics/Actuarial Science at Columbia University. It was there that I fortified my strengths in quantitative reasoning and where I credit my aptitude for problem solving.…

This reading touches on things I was aware of, such as the themes orientalist brought to the nineteenth century ballet. This reading is also related to previous experiences with dance history because of its detailed history of the nineteenth century ballet. The author does a good job setting the scene in the first three pages, including regions of the world, dates and literature from the time period. In our classes so far, we have started with the most basic facts of the time period, such as Baroque dance beginning roughly in 1660 and evolving from the French courts. The Jowitt text would be a good resource to reference for information about this time period for future papers and…
