According to the writer Mehri Yalfani, in the story “Newcomer” language barrier is the most common hurdle illustrated for immigrants. She depicted her own experience in the story. Her struggle on immigration from Iran to France and later then to Canada explained the hardships she went through. Her biggest obstacle was language as she was quiet person and could rarely speak English appropriately. She avoided speaking as she felt nervous on pronouncing wrong words. A well known author “Himani Bannerji” depicts the problem of racism in her story “The other family”. In this story she talks about an African mother and her fear for her child growing up in Canada with the values and ideologies different than her and feels rejected by her own child. When her daughter comes home with a sketch of her family that resembles a “white” family, her mother felt rejected in her own skin, “Panic at the thought of losing her child, despair and guilt galvanized her into speech she rejected, and she looked with anger at her only child, who it seemed wanted to be white who had rejected her dark mother.
