I believe the purpose of education is to give students the necessary skills to reach one’s full potential. In Achievement of Desire by Richard Rodriguez, the author tells how his involvement with education caused him to become disconnected from his family. Because there were no minority studies, the author’s education caused him to become isolated from his family while also disconnecting him from his culture; however, today the emergence of intersectional perspectives allows minorities to understand their culture and create deeper connections with their communities. Unfortunately, my family's background consists of poverty, drug and alcohol abuse, and death.…
Scanlon begins his attempt to show that desire does not play a role in motivation by drawing a distinction between two types of desires: Unmotivated desires and motivated desires. Unmotivated desires are things like hunger and thirst; these types of desires are involuntary. Motivated desires are the direct result of the conclusion that there is a reason to perform an action. Moreover, our reasoning motivates motivated desires — they are voluntary. According to Scanlon, given that there are motivated desires, which depend on our reasoning, and only exist because we have reasoned, then motivated desires should be taken as support for the idea that desire is not needed to be motivated by reason.…
In today’s society, not much thought goes into how an author finds his or her voice. Many think of it as a “natural” talent or something someone’s born with, but that is not the case. Only a few people understand the process behind developing one’s voice. Even though discovering one’s voice and identity are not normally viewed as abusive, in some cases the process behind it can be detrimental to one’s character. In Barbara Mellix’s personal essay “From Outside, In” and Richard Rodriguez’s “The Achievement of Desire,” both of the authors discover their writing voices due to their childhoods, which left them with psychological consequences affecting them throughout various points of their lives.…
Summary: Bernard Williams was a twentieth-century philosopher, most notable for his theory that attempts to examine the principles of death and desire. His theory is strongly centered on opposition to the existentialist idea that our inevitable death makes our life meaningless. To begin with, Williams makes an important distinction of the nature of desire by organizing the concept into two distinct categories. A conditional desire is something we look forward to in the future or as we get older, if we have enough time to do it. However, conditional desires do not give a person purpose or meaning and it doesn’t reduce someone’s interest or will to live.…
Swift however, does not intend us to emulate either Yahoo or Houyhnhnm behavior, but rather to take the positive aspects which each portray, and dilute them into a compromise that befits the healthy functioning of a human being. Williams agrees that Swift is creating a novel whose moral is to say, “Passions and affections, carefully guided, are treated as necessary in creatures who are imperfect and interdependent” (Williams 286), and likewise the “Houyhnhnms, far from being a model of perfection, are intended to show the inadequacy of the life of reason” (Williams 277). A being embodying such a balance of passion and rationality is introduced in the form of Captain Pedro de Mendez, who “illustrates the error of viewing man as split between passions that deserve to be exterminated and abstract reason” (Nichols 1167). As the captain…
This research was conducted hypothesizing that similarities in race would show in their attraction preferences to subjects of opposite or same races. More specifically, they expected to find higher racial preferences of the opposite race then the past but at the same time expected to see majority racial preferences for romantic partners of the same race. White more than Black, women more than men, and old more than young users stated a preference for a same-race partner. Understanding, natural similarities in racial preferences are helpful when examining the…

Freud, perhaps made the greatest contribution to Psychotherapy and as part of that contribution, most of the current theories of Psychology are developed based on or in part of Freud’s views on development and personality (Sharf, 2012, p. 28). As part of Freud’s Psychoanalysis, he developed the drive theory of personality, Ego Psychology, Object Relations Psychology, Self Psychology, and Relational Psychoanalysis. Freud’s Drive Theory is one of the most controversial therapeutic views, which contains the theories of innate drives that differ from the self-preservation drive, and the species-preservation drives (2012, p.32). Similar attitudes can mean people's values and interests align with each (Burton, Westen, & Kowalski, 2015) and can also influence how people choose relationships (Batool & Malik, 2010). Condon and Crano (1998) investigated this variable using a descriptive case study method where subjects (N=226) were asked to complete a survey regarding their attitude on several topics. The results showed that the relationship between similarity and attraction was influenced by how the subjects believed strangers were evaluating of them, therefore, results were limited and the results could show no concrete significance. In addition to this, Montoya, Horton, & Kirchner (2008) combined 313 laboratory and field investigations assessing the impact of actual and perceived similarity upon attraction. Initially, the lab results indicated that associations between both types of similarity to be a strong indicator of interpersonal attraction patterns.…
