Summary: Collegiate Athletes Should Get Paid

Decent Essays
I believe that collegiate athletes should get payed for many different reasons. If college level athletes got payed they would most likely stay in school longer. Staying in school longer would led to more degree opportunities, which would equal more successful students and a higher success rate for the college. Students who aren’t athletes find time for jobs bringing in extra income, where athletes find it hard to make time for anything other than practicing and studying. If athletes in college were paid this would take a major financial burden of their backs, giving them having more time to focus on the studies and their abilities and not have to worry about how they are going to pay for their next meal. Most collegiate athletes already

After reading the assigned material for this week, I do not think that athletes should receive money for playing NCAA sports. In the article, “US College Connection”, Posnanski reports all of the incentives that college athletes are given. For example, NCAA athletes are provided with free tuition, room and board, access to exceptional facilities, and the best coaches and doctors. The list continues on. If the system were to start paying athletes for participating in sport, it brings up several questions of where this money would come from and if all college athletes would get paid commission.…

They are already receiving compensation through scholarships and it is evident that college kids will not spend their money the way it should be. Colleges are mistakenly looked at as being institutions that bring in a ridiculous amount of money and many people do not realize the amount of money that they have to spend to keep the college running, and running smoothly. If college athletes were paid, it would lead to the ultimate downfall of college sports and the downfall of many colleges. Colleges just simply cannot afford to pay people to compete for them and they should not have…

Twenty-two points, six rebounds, and three assists are the stats of Shabazz Napier, star point guard for the University of Connecticut's basketball team. Napier has just won the NCAA championship game and receives the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award. Because of this, Napier has become somewhat of a poster boy for the NCAA. Thus, the media will be rushing to hear his now valued opinion. When being interviewed about a week after the game, Napier says that there are "hungry nights where I'm not able to eat, but I still gotta play to my capabilities" (Sherman).…

The average NCAA student athletes work about 43.3 hours per week (Alessi). That is like a full time job! So between their academics and sports, there really is not any time in the season to have a job. The athletes put in a lot more work than most people with a paying job do. Athletes have to be in the weight room getting stronger, and on the field getting better at their sport too, which is a lot more strenuous than a desk job.…

Some may agree, and most of them make a compelling point as to why they shouldn’t. Some of these points are because the athletes get paid already in scholarships and specific aids. As Rebecca Zissou states in the article, “Fair Play: Should College Athletes Get Paid?” "Many top players receive tuition, books, tutoring, housing, meals, clothing, elite coaching, medical care, travel expenses, and career counseling. " What she fails to mention is that most of these things that the athletes receive only cover a small portion of the actual whole cost of living and learning, and being sheltered, and traveling; the list could go on.…

Due to NCAA rules, athletes have not been allowed compensation for their participation in college athletics. This rule has caused a great divide and debate within the collegiate sport world, especially with the recent exponential growth of college athletics. For instance, college sports critics Val Ackerman and Larry Scott argue “that college is ultimately about getting a degree and getting ready for life long after their playing days are over” supporting their claim that college athletes should not be paid (Ackerman and Scott). Opposing that view is the idea that college athletics offer exactly those benefits and more, which would be maximized with payment. As of right now, college athletes are being compensated through scholarships that average…

Should NCAA athletes be paid by Alexis molina I fully think that NCAA athletes should be paid for their effort on their college team. College athletics have gained immense popularity among Americans over the past few decades. This has resulted into increased in a lot of money for the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the participating colleges, which has sparked the debate of whether college athletes should be given money beyond their athletic scholarships but I think they should get paid for the following reason they should be paid because without the players that risk injuries on the team the association would not make the money they do now and their coaches get paid but why not them and most importantly students after…

This is crazy because all these players get so many extra things provided to them already so why should they need to get paid. If they want to get paid they should work hard and make it to the pros. If the athletes that play college sports were to get paid those schools would lose a lot of money because it would be way too expensive to pay all of these athletes. You have to keep in mind that they already have to pay the coaches and teachers let alone athletes. From another aspect of looking at if college athletes should be paid or not is that it would take away how the players play the game.…

The NCAA rakes in on average $12 billion in revenues annually that flow in through college athletics programs(Finley, 2015). The latest and biggest debate is "Whether or not college athletes should get paid?". When college athletes go to college they are not allowed to earn any money while they are participating in athletics, but is that fair? Generally they are putting in full time work hours(40/week) or sometimes even more. As more and more college athletes are struggling to get by through and in some cases after college, it 's time for them to start earning some form of compensation in return for the hard work they put in for their schools.…
