Generations of Reliability With his fishing rod in tow, an elderly gentleman waves goodbye to his wife and embarks in his Subaru. In another scene, a young man drives along the highway in the early morning with a surfboard attached to his roof. Their stories diverge when they both arrive at the beach to share their love of surfing and the dependability of their Subarus. The commercial for the new Subaru Crosstrek utilizes an effective combination of compare and contrast, pathos, and ethos to persuade car buyers to experience what makes a Subaru, a Subaru. In order to appeal to a general audience of all ages, Subaru chose an old and a young man of indeterminate age. More viewers are able to connect to the commercial because they recognize a person of their age range enjoying the benefits of their Subaru Crosstrek. If the viewers are able to relate with the characters, then they are more likely to purchase this vehicle. For example, a young man who values their relationship with their grandfather may see their purchase of a Subaru as a way to strengthen their relationship. Similarly, an elderly man may see his investment in a Subaru as a way to be adventurous and spend quality time with his family. Commercials tend to oversell their products. They use an overly enthusiastic character to show the best features of the product and use advertising techniques to sway the consumer. Subaru, on the other hand, was successful in using multiple strategies in their commercial to establish credibility with the consumer, evoke emotions, and determine the Subaru Crosstrek should be their next vehicle. With this commercial, the company also had the opportunity to reach millions of people while they are watching the news or their favorite television shows.
