Although I have not always enjoyed English class, I started to appreciate it more as I became older. The major values that I have obtained from courses in English is a new world filled with powerful storytelling. Whether it is writing your own story or reading someone else's, words and ideas can empower one’s view on certain topics. As a quiet girl, I turned to English as a way to express my thoughts and ideas. My strengths in my English classes were the ability to assert my opinions, emotions, and views on certain themes given to me. I developed these strengths my sophomore year of high school. I give much of my gratitude to Mr. Gulath for opening my eyes into the real world and gaining a sense of society’s madness in literature and in reality. However, my major flaws in English has to be punctuation in essays, and developing complex sentences in introductory paragraphs. Whenever I write, I always think I am doing a terrible job. This year in English, I hope to not be too hard on myself and just write efficiently. I am very excited to start College Composition with you as my teacher. I think I will be able to learn certain aspects of English at a higher college level. This is extremely beneficial for me as a student who is college bound. In relation to the literature side of English, my reading life has significantly improved after my junior year. I have learned to time manage, and make the effort to read for pleasure. I enjoy to read self help and fiction novels. After junior year, I started to keep a journal of all the books I have read. It makes me feel better about myself, when I see the list of books. Learning about topics and experiences through literature on my free time has made me become more educated. During this semester of English W131, I have experienced both accomplishments and setbacks while learning how to improve my writing skills. Throughout the course, I have learned that writing is not only about how much information is in the paper, but also about how well the writer’s thoughts are expressed throughout the text. Practicing many different styles of writing as I did in the class has helped me tremendously with my delivery in my writing. I believe that this course was one to prepare us for future writing courses with professors we will encounter who will give us feedback that may puzzle us because it will require more work and more thinking. Although I have had difficulty in the class, I do believe that I have learned from my mistakes and that I am finishing the course with stronger writing skills that will help me though the rest of my college career and life.…

The story that I want to share is, the basic yet often talked about transition, between high school and college. High school was so much easier for me back then, you could get away with so much more and not worried about homework as much. Now in college, it feels like I’ve sat down for the longest, scariest, most agonizing rollercoaster of my life. English in high school wasn’t much of a concern to me. Teachers didn’t persist on teaching students good writing habits or the depth of what writing can go into, like they do in college.…

Throughout the entirety of this English 101 course, I have seen my skills as a writer grow. In the beginning of the school year, my writing fell short of my expectations, but as I continued to work and learn the principles of writing, I have written papers that I am proud to say are mine. Among the aspects of my writing I have improved, the best strives are seen within my my counter arguments and overall strength and coherency of my papers. To begin, when looking at a paper I wrote in August on necessity of first drafts, there were large gaps in my elaboration, bringing concerns as to whether I was arguing and proving a point or merely summarizing what Lamott, the author of the article, originally said. When attempting to argue my evidence, I stated,…

Everyone hates English class is what I thought before taking English 102. However, that may have been the case before I entered Dr. Byrd’s domain, but after finishing the class I have come to the realization that English class can be greatly resourceful. English 102 this year has had its ups and downs, and I must admit the ups outweigh the downs. Meaning, this year, I have learned that I am not a student who wants to read or write, but through reading and writing my mind and skill sets concerning English have grown. To be completely honest I have mixed feelings about writing and I don’t really have any memorable experiences that made me feel this way, it is just the experiences that I have had with the subject while trying to apply it. I struggle with what to write down mostly and creativity in general and I don’t really excel at any part of it. If I were to say I “excel” at anything it would be revising my work and adding to it. At the end of the semester I hope that I have relearned some key writing elements that lack of practice has caused me to lose.…

As I think about my experiences throughout the semester of English 101, I have realized that I have learned some very important requirements that are important to help improve my writing. “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything (George Bernard Shaw).” During this course, reading and comprehending the materials given was not only a tough task for me but it was also demanding. I was challenged to change my thought process on what it was to be a good writer. The concept of understanding the value of correctly communicating thoughts differs from learning to apply the techniques needed to communicate successfully.…
