After repeatedly finding articles that had negative things to say about these schools, I found an interesting article that took a different viewpoint and discussed the positive effects that attending single-sex schools can have. This article titled, “Single-sex Education in Northern Canada: A Case Study of Trapline Elementary School” was a summary of a case study done in Trapline Elementary School where the progress and effects of students was tracked. The article pointed out positive benefits that came from this elementary school and their single-sex schooling technique. The school itself was actually a co-ed school, but they organized classes into single-sex settings. The first benefit the study found was that these classrooms benefitted the students in social-emotional ways. Blakesley pointed out in his article that, “There appears to be an increased ability for students to share their concerns, issues, and challenges in a single-sex setting. In particular, students identified that they felt more comfortable raising their hand, talking, and sharing ideas in a single-sex classroom” (7). The idea of students feeling more comfortable in class is outstanding. To any parent considering these schools, this way of organizing classes into single-sex may be more appealing to them. After hearing that the students felt more comfortable as well, parents would most likely be happier sending their children off to school.
