Paul Marcinkus, a high- ranking member of Catholic clergy, found himself as a main contributor to this scandal. When the bank collapsed it was discovered to have 1.3 billion dollars in debt. The Vatican loaned the sum of this money to fake constellation companies scattered around Europe and Central America. When a warrant for Marcinkus’ arrest was issued, the Vatican won immunity for him and allowed Marcinkus to return home as a practicing modest parish priest. Marcinkus was quoted regarding his part in the scandal, “All I can say, it was a heck a lot of money.” clearly showing his lack of remorse for wrongdoing. He was later arrested for an unrelated issue however while being escorted from court each morning co- defendants would bow and blow a kiss as he passed.
