Domestic abuse, also known as spousal abuse, occurs in a marriage or a serious relationship. It is when one wants to dominate and control the other person. “This can include many behaviors that can intimidate, manipulate, isolate, frighten, threaten, and or injure themselves or the other person” (National Coalition Against Domestic Abuse). There are many types of abuse, signs, and reasons why it is not reported quickly. Domestic abuse can be physical, sexual, economic, and or psychological. Physical abuse is physical contact with another person. Some examples of physical abuse are hitting, biting, punching, and kicking. Sexual abuse is forcing someone to do anything with sexual contact. Economic abuse is when one person is in control over one's financial information; therefore, leaving the person with nothing. Last we have psychological abuse is when a person name-calls and threatens the other person. An example of this is “If you leave I will kill you”. There are many signs to tell if someone is a victim of domestic abuse. Normally, the abuser starts to act as if they own the victim. They normally have a long list of excuses and fears. They feel there is no way out without a bad ending. There are emotional and situational reasons they stay. Some emotional examples are believing that the abuser will stop what they're doing, fearing the abuser will threaten to hurt them or someone important to them, feeling helpless and trapped, fear of major changes in their life, feeling guilty and responsible, and attachment to the abuser. Some situational examples economic dependence on the abuser, fear of emotional damage to their and/or custody children, fear of physical harm to them or someone important to them, fear they won't be taken seriously, and fear of the abuser will make a story that will make him
