Erickson’s stages of personality development include; Trust vs. Mistrust, Autonomy vs. Shame, Initiative vs. Guilt, Industry vs. Inferiority, Identity vs. Identity Diffusion, Intimacy vs. Isolation, Generativity vs. Stagnation, and Ego integrity vs. Despair. Samantha demonstrated the Initiative vs. Guilt stage which involves ages three to five years old. In this stage, “children begins to construct things in play and accepts parents as a role model.”(Erickson, 2015). Samantha was able to demonstrate motivation and creativity while playing as she made her own decisions to dress and undress the dolls. (Erickson, 2015). She was a hundred percent sure of the task that she was performing. Ainsworth and Bowlby’s theory is also applicable to Samantha. This theory is about the child’s attachment to the care giver. Among the three types of attachments, secure is when the child is close to the mother and uses her as a home base. Insecure or avoidant is when the mother leaves the child and when she returns the child avoids her. The ambivalent attachment is when the mother leaves the child and when she returns the child does not know whether be angry or loving toward the mother. According to Piaget’s theory there are four stages of cognitive development; sensory motor which occurs from birth to two years old, preoperational which runs from two to seven years old, concrete operation which occurs from seven to 12 years old and formal operation which is from 12 years and up (Piaget, 2015). Samantha falls under the preoperational stage which includes terms such as symbolic function, egocentrism and centration (Piaget, 2015). She falls under egocentrism because while she was playing Samantha had her back turned away from her mother. (Piaget, 2015). Although Samantha was blocking the dolls while she was playing, she thought her mother was watching her the whole time. Vygotsky’s theory emphasizes the social nature of learning. According to Vygotsky’s theory of zone of proximal development, it begins when the skill develops, up until the skill is acquired which happens in four stages (Vygotsky, 2015 ). The first state involves assistance provided by others, the second state is assistance provided by self, the third state is internalization and automatic habit formation and the last state is recursiveness which is when the is skill is acquired and used in new situations. (Vygotsky, 2015). Samantha falls under the term of zone of proximal development because at the beginning of the game she used help from her mother. For example, the
