People do not get to pick the color of their skin, yet skin color has caused great hardship for people in the world. In the south they still had the confederate flag above the American flag showing that whites are always ranked above blacks. Whites continually tried to make it unfair to blacks when attending schools, stores, and other public places. The novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor, is an excellent example of historical fiction based on the fight for civil rights because of its realistic portrayal of those times. One hardship blacks suffered was protecting their families from white dominance. Papa talks to Mr. Jamison about how he wants the children to know how much he tries to keep them safe. Papa said, "I want …show more content…
Mama explains to Cassie the things that blacks did to be seen as human beings. Mama said " 'The people who were making money bringing slaves from Africa preached that black people weren't really people like white people, so slavery was all right.' " (Taylor 127) The quote from the book is showing that blacks were not seen as human beings like whites were. The explanation Mama gave Cassie was for her to understand that her great grandparents had to go through many hardships being slaves to become free. One example is Cassie's great grandpa having to run away from his owner and hide in a cave until slavery was over. Many slaves ran away until the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Second example is Cassie getting pushed off the side walk because she wouldn't move for Lillian Jean. Lillian Jean's father decided to push Cassie off the sidewalk and make Cassie apologize to Lillian Jean. The last example is having the book in school label blacks as "nigra." Little man was so excited to get books in school, but when he got his book it was ripped, dirty, and used till it could be not longer used. Little Man had refused to take the book and was willing to take a beating because of it. To sum up blacks were never treated like humans no matter what the occasion

In the novel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred Taylor, Cassie Logan, an African- American girl, and her family become strongly disappointed in the segregated state of Mississippi, and the quality of black of treatment by the Caucasians of Strawberry and the neighboring towns. For example, Cassie experiences first-hand the horrible and cruel racism of the Caucasians underlined by Mr. Barnett when he announces, “Whose little [n*****] is this”(Taylor 111). This displays how slavery has ended, however, the white people are still clinging to the idea that blacks are less or lower than whites. This also shows the value Africans-Americans have in these communities in the South because, even though the North won, the South still treat Blacks…

After I read this CNN news report, I had mixed feelings about it. I was quite amazed, shocked, and interested by the information that I read. At first, it did not sink into me because I realized that racism to this extent is still going on in this world today! To me, it felt that these students were not given their basic needs as human beings even after slavery was abolished, and after African Americans were given their rights. How can these rights be looked at wrongly?…

When I looked further into the book Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry by Mildred D. Taylor one theme kept playing over and over in my mind and as I continued to read the book showed me this is the theme of the book. The theme was even when people try to bring you down or discriminate you, you can still stand up to them. It means when you are being bullied or mistreated for who you are you should stand up for yourself. One of the Characters in the story Mary or Cassie’s mom stood up for her belief.…

For example, when Grant goes to see Mr. Pichot, he had him wait for more than two hours in the kitchen just so he could meet him and once he had seen him, he treated him very poorly. Throughout the story, when the African Americans were speaking, they had to speak politely and when the whites where speaking the African Americans were not allowed to look at them. If they did not talk to them like this then, usually, they would be whipped. This is why the African Americans had feared the whites. The biggest example of this is when Jefferson is sent to jail for a crime that he did not commit and then killed for it.…
