The traditional Islamic views on the treatment of women in A Thousand Splendid Suns raise the awareness of feminism, suppression, and the different perceptions on the superiority of women, especially in the Middle East. The society of the Islamic Nations seem to interpret the Qu’ran in support of male dominance. Females are denied their basic rights and, are not protected by domestic violence. The feminist movement is beginning to view the traditional ways as challengeable and is supported by the views of journalist studying the woman in Middle Eastern, Islamic communities.

Hosseini, also portrays the female figure 's courage, mental strength, and endurance, to exceed that of the men characters. The men though would almost treat the women as property. A particular scene was written to emphasize the immoral abuse presented to the characters. The character Rasheed rages at his wife, Mariam, for her poor cooking, forcing her to chew pebbles. Mariam 's mouth was full of broken teeth and blood. (Hosseini 104) This is one of the first instances where abuse is seen in the novel especially through the infamous husband figure, Rasheed, whose character develops into a true physical and mental violent male. Abusing a female is a common occurrence in a good handful of countries in the Middle East. The society in which the characters live in throughout the novel, chooses to ignore the female 's problems in the household since they “belong” to and are the concern of their husbands only.
