On Monday, our class had an in-class discussion about Goblin Market, which is a poem written by Christina Rosetti in 1859. Although it has quite a wide range of possible theories that it can be examined through, I propose to examine Goblin Market through the Marxist Approach by analyzing the Victorian society’s effect on the story through a Marxist Criticism perspective. I chose this because the story clearly has strong undertones that represent consumer culture and its connection to the struggle between the groups in the capitalist class system. By analyzing the different characters in the story and their roles, one can definitely find underlying meanings about the society in which it was produced- Victorian Britain, which was a newly industrialized…

In the past few centuries, feminists have taken it upon themselves to combat the misogyny and sexism women face by speaking up through any form, including poetry. They have touched on subjects such as women embracing their sexuality, the acknowledgement of the intersectionality of cultural identities, and the objectification and commodification of women. Poetry can be used to make political statements, so it should not be surprising that women would use the art form to voice their opposition to gender inequality. Rita Dove is a self-proclaimed feminist poet that writes about the misogyny and/or misogynoir women experience. In Ekaterini Georgoudaki 's Rita Dove: Crossing Boundaries, Georgoudaki describes Rita Dove perfectly by writing: "She…

Each story has many perspectives: the ones of women, men, children, the powerful, the powerless, the conqueror and the conquered. A different side of the story is brought to light by each new perspective, all of them immensely influenced by culture and society. In societies all over the world, women are seen as inferior to men with minuscule powers or rights. Strongly influenced by culture, these ideals are set in society as gender roles. A new woman herself, she condemns male authors who believe that women are art instead of people. This will also become an apparent theme throughout this poem. She uses many of the defining factors of a new woman to explain how the gender hierarchy is unfair to women. We can see that Rossetti wove in her values as a feminist in order to reveal to the reader that women should be of their own person. Considered to be a fairly simple and obvious poem, “No, Thank You, John” should also be thought of as an advocate of the new woman concept.…

The theme of obsession and addiction is evident throughout Christina Rossetti’s poem, Goblin Market. Goblin Market can be interpreted as a storyline unfolding the symptoms, signs, treatment, and the overall dangers of drug addiction. From the beginning lines, the goblins are identified as drug dealing creatures. Rossetti creates a drug-dealing setting where the male creatures are the sellers, and the young unmarried women are the customers. The robotic crying of the goblins, ‘Come buy, come buy’ oddly enough allows them to be manipulative and successful entrepreneurs.…
