Roadtrip Nation Roadtrip Nation began with four friends and one question: “What do I want to do with my life?” Upon completion of their college education these four friends were unsure about the career paths and life choices ahead of them. They knew there had to be more to life than just the traditional routes laid out before them, so they planned a roadtrip to talk to inspiring people to find out how they defined their own roads in life and came to do what they love for a living. Fast-forward a few years and Roadtrip Nation is now a national success. It has evolved into a PBS series, three books, an online community, and a student movement. Which is how I started the path on my own road trip, with three friends I just met in school. For our road trip we decided to do the service learning aspect of Roadtrip Nation. Instead of interviewing three people who we thought to be successful, we participated in community service activities and interviewed the leader of said activities. This is where my group ran into a little trouble. We all knew that we wanted to do the service learning aspect of Roadtrip Nation, because we all have a desire to help other people. While searching online for a new place to volunteer, I began looking into Pass it Along, a non-profit organization committed to helping teenagers become confident and compassionate through self-discovery, volunteering, and leadership. Through Pass it Along, I found an opportunity to volunteer with SCARC, the Sussex County Association for Retarded Citizens, and help people with developmental disabilities.
