Senior Event Reflection

On February 20, 2016, I volunteered for the Senior Games. I assisted with the Cycling Event in the early morning. Volunteering for this event was a delightful experience for me because I communicated with a new age group that I rarely interact with. From speaking with employees from the City of College Station, they explained their marketing efforts for the Senior Games. They went through resources such as newspapers, flyers, and email. I really like the idea of using the newspapers because seniors stay away from technology as much as possible. Overall with this event, I learned the importance that effective senior events are for the community. Just from participating in cycling, many families of the competitors came out to cheer on there family …show more content…
They are in impeccable shape and bring a whole new appreciation to the sport and seniors as a whole. This event is a fantastic idea for the Bryan/College Station area. This experience has helped me gain volunteer hours for academic goals in order to graduate. This was a beneficial experience for my future desired career, a General Manager of a hotel. I will be interacting with a diverse group of people when I begin my career in the real world. This event is a starting point to me strengthening my skillset. For the future, regardless of what community I reside in, I would love to incorporate more senior events all over. I can utilize my experience of this event to brainstorm new ideas for future events. This experience can be applied to any future community engagement. I noticed the importance of having emergency professional on staff if needed. The value of strong team players makes the event even more successful. My key observation that was touching is that every single competitor was filled with joy that this event exists. More word of mouth from these impressed seniors with bring larger attendance to the upcoming year. My perception of this event was that there is always need for improvement but overall very impressive in the sense of being creative to appeal to the senior age group. I am impressed with the effective flow that was performed during the entirety of the

I took the opportunity to volunteer at the Frederick 4H Therapeutic Riding Program. This program offers individuals with disabilities to ride a horse in order to build their social skills, build their motor skills, and give them confidence. This organization states, “Our Mission is to encourage and provide Frederick County, Maryland citizens with medically certified mental, physical and/or emotional disabilities with equestrian activities to learn basic horsemanship skills, improve physically with better muscle tone, balance and posture; and improve their emotional…

In Biddeford there have been women that were well- known in many different ways, from a journalist, to mayors, to a woman who created a women's association in Biddeford. Although this person may not have done any of these things or is the most famous or well known woman in Biddeford history, she is someone I have looked up to every single day since I was born, my mom, Kerry Mariello. Although she didn't have as large impact on Biddeford history with her actions as others, she is just as inspiring and holds some of the same skills as those who did. This is why I believe she should belong in the same category as these amazing other Biddeford women.…

During my senior year in high school, my friend Jonathon George and I created a charity event called Hoops for the Cure. This event was made to acquire donations for members of the school population battling cancer. In days leading up to the event, students would travel to businesses asking for contributions for the cause. During school, offerings were also accepted in a drop off box. The main event was a basketball game between the Hempfield High School men’s team versus the Rec All Stars.…

At the festival each volunteer is assigned a game or station to run. This year I was in charge of the balloon dart game and also helped with other stations. Through FBLA I have been given the opportunity to meet and help many individuals and have learned to be a strong and confident person. Outside of school, I have partaken in the Prescott Girls Softball Association since I was eight years old and continuously volunteer during tryouts. The day of tryouts I assist the board members in the field by shagging balls and registering players.…

Volunteering at Veterans Affairs Medical Center was one of the greatest experience I've ever had. Sitting down with the elderly and getting to know them, I noticed if more teens could actually sit down and take the time to talk to an elderly person they could gain an opulent amount of knowledge. Sitting down and getting to talk an innumerable amount of veterans as I could, I was intrigued by how each person had a story of their own going through WWII. Voluntarily, I was able to contribute to the organization by having open conversations with the veterans, providing beverages, and having a great time. It wasn't till the end of the program when my perception began to change about the organization I volunteered for, it's more than just about kids…
