Analysis Of Recognizing Child Abuse Video

1. Define child abuse as stated in the video.
According to the Recognizing Child Abuse video, it mentions how “3 to 5 children will die each day from child abuse and neglect” (Recognizing Child Abuse Video). This statistic is tragically heartbreaking in my opinion. I honestly cried while I was watching this video. The video then mentions about a heart-breaking story of a little girl named Nixzmary Brown who was 7 years old that lost her life to child abuse. The video mentions how the poor little girl was tied to a chair and forced to use a litter box when needed to use the restroom. The video also mentions how this little girl’s cause of death was because of blunt force trauma towards her head after the little girl grabbed yogurt from the fridge without permission. What this little girl endured was severe neglect and abuse for which cost her, her life. These are some of the many signs of neglect and child abuse towards children. I seriously hope there was justice in this awful heart-breaking case. The video then discusses how “Law enforcement and teachers are the highest of professionals to report any signs of abuse and how adults who come in regular contact of children file more than half of reports to report any signs of abuse”( Recognizing Child Abuse Video). In addition, the video defines Child Abuse as “any act that endangers or impairs a child’s physical or emotional health and development” and how this consists of: “Any damage done to a child for which cannot be reasonably explained, appears to be non-accidental, and often represented by an injury or series of injuries” (Recognizing Child Abuse Video). Furthermore, the video mentions “how 16% of children who suffer from child abuse suffered from physical abuse and how 10% of children who suffer from child abuse suffer from sexual abuse. Lastly, the video mentions how 60% of children who suffer from child abuse suffer from Neglect and how 5% of those children that suffer from child abuse suffer from psychological/emotional maltreatment” (Recognizing Child Abuse Video). According to the video, “Neglect simply means by not providing the basic needs or not providing the basic care the

Neglect is “maltreatment involving abandonment, lack of supervision, improper feeding, lack of adequate medical or dental care, inappropriate dress, uncleanliness, and lack of safety” (Berns, 2016, p. 159). This neglect can result in the child being referred to the Children’s Bureau so that they can look into the program that deals with neglect. The adults may also be treating their children poorly, because “children may become scapegoats for buried negative feelings” (Berns, 2016, p. 163). Something bad could have happened in the parent’s childhood and they could be taking it out on the children. There is the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act that “authorizes grants to states to assist them in developing and strengthening programs designed to prevent child abuse and neglect while…

Children can be neglected both emotionally and physically. If a child is given the proper amount of food and shelter, but is lacking in forming secure attachment and relationships, the child is said to be emotionally neglected. A child is said to be physically neglected if the child is given emotional care, but poverty or other means do not allow the parent or caregiver to fully provide for the child, it is considered physical neglect. According to Wentzel and Asher (2008), neglect can have long term effects on the individual such as impaired brain development, depression, lack of social skills, developmental delays, food insecurity, increased anxiety, and difficulty forming relationships. Forming relationships is tricky with neglected children because children are sometimes so neglected, they want to attach to anyone and anything (Kazdin, Moser, Colbus, Bell.,1985).…

Child neglect involves acts of omission, but there is no consensus as to whether the focus should be on the child’s unmet needs, the parents’ or guardians’ behavior, or actual/potential harm to children (Tang, 2008). White & Hoskins (2011) defined neglect as an act of omission that results in the failure to provide for a child’s basic needs, which in turn results in the harm of the child. In her definition of child neglect, Tang (2008) divides the child’s unmet basic needs into two categories – physical and/or psychological. In the year 2014, there have been an estimated 702,000 victims of child maltreatment in the United States, 75.0% of which were victims of child neglect (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Children 's Bureau,…
