The process for diagnosing ASD can take up to 13 months because it involves looking at the child’s habits and social behaviors for longer periods of time (Bridgemohan, 2016). Developmental screening and evaluation at the primary care level can also contribute to delays in diagnosis and initiation of treatment. The differential diagnosis of ASD include the following:
• Widespread cognitive impairment: Many individuals with ASD also have an intellectual disability (ID) or cognitive impairment.
