American Sniper Movie Analysis

American Sniper is a movie about love, family, and PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). The main character is named Chris Kyle and his wife is name Taya Kyle, they have two children together and live in Texas. This paper will include a movie review and discuss how the movie used interpersonal communication. When the movie first begins they take the audience back in time to when Chris Kyle was a little boy and he gets his first kill (a deer) in the woods. As the movie continues we see a fight break out with the younger brother getting beat up and he steps in. This is when he realizes that he is a “sheep dog” instead of a “sheep”. Steven Pinker did research in profanity use and found that swear words, such as ‘fuck’, appear frequently in certain contexts and can play a different range of functions (Wang). One of these functions that can apply to any other profanity word is using profanity can be a person’s way of keeping their emotions deep down inside because otherwise without profanity they could show a form of weakness. Nonverbal communication is a process of generating meaning using behavior other than words (Chapter 4 Nonverbal Communication). Furthermore, nonvocal nonverbal communication is body language (gestures, facial expressions, eye contact, etc. (Chapter 4 Nonverbal Communication). For example, when Chris Kyle first joins the marines on foot outside of the house, he uses a hand gesture to signal that they can bust down the door and invade the home. Also, the action model is used in this movie. For instance, when he is on the phone with his wife and the HMMVW gets shot at and hits the rocks, he leaves the phone on the ground and his wife ends up hearing all the gun shots and the hollering from the men around the phone. This is part of the action model because both the source and the receiver send and receive messages at the same time (Interpersonal Communications).
