Directing
Cody kept us all aware of his vision from the beginning. For my scene, he made especially clear that I was to “lead” with my eyes. This kept my character Helen to appear in a constant state of calculation and overconfidence. Later, when Helen was condemned, I was the only person in the whole show to get on my knees and beg. The other women in the cast held their dignity.

It made it very easy for us to play off of our surroundings and mentally prepare. The show would not be what it had been without it, for it not only improved the spectacle but our performances as well.
Lighting Design and Sound
The music in the beginning was a personal favorite effect of mine, because it got everyone in the theater into the right frame of mind. Another favorite was the green light and buzzing in chorus 2. This specific effect and was one of the more modernized ones, and gave the sense of not being in the right time – in a good way. Overall, the music and lights and sound effects gave an edge to the show that would have been lacking otherwise.
Costume Design and Makeup
The chorus girls’ ghastly appearance added to their miserable situation, presented by the “dead and dirty” makeup jobs. Their costumes were washed out and dry, reflecting the feel of the show. The soldier’s black makeup and garb helped present the modern approach this production was taking with the story. Now, my (Helen’s) original dress was all over a shiny crimson, but after I accidentally ripped the first skirt’s hem, it was changed to have a black overlay on top of a different shiny crimson skirt.
