On April 23, 2004, a man named Arthur Volupides died from a head injury while intoxicated. I was called to investigate the death the same day. It seemed he had fallen down the stairs on accident but evidence points otherwise. When I arrived at the house at 1am I found Arthur Volupides dead, on the bottom of the stairs, with his wife Queenie Volupides in distress with her friends. I have come to the conclusion that Arthur Volupides did not die from an accident, but instead was tripped and killed by his wife.…
The Middle Passage has been a focal point of investigation for many historians who are dedicated to comprehending the slave trade. The literature as a whole reveal that slaves asserted autonomy over their social being by committing suicide. This act disrupted the process of transatlantic voyages as slaves surrendered the physical self to reclaim their psychological and social strength. In addition, European perception of suicide shaped the ways in which slave traders and surgeons responded to captives’ means of resistance. Self-inflicted death amongst the enslaved was brought to the attention of British Parliament via testimonies of pro-abolitionists.…
Socrates was unjustly convicted in 399 BC by a group of five hundred of his fellow Athenians who charged him with impiety and sentenced him to death. Impiety was prominent throughout the kingdom but Socrates was convicted without hard evidence that he practiced it. Socrates was obsessed with wisdom and he made many enemies on his quest to be wise. His beliefs ld him to challenge many important people including politicians, religious leaders, poets, and artisans. Socrates believed in evaluating ones self which included personal morals and virtue.…
1. Epicurus has a different view of death in the way that since death is not a sensation, we should not fear death. He believed that the good life consists in simple but deep pleasures and the absence of pain, in an attitude of imperturbable emotional tranquility. We should seek pleasure in conversation, friendship, a good but simple diet, and a prudent life (Pojman and Vaughn, 2014, pg. 538). He also thought that death is nothing to us, since long as we exist, death is not with us; but when death comes, then we do not exist.…
What would one expect to be the behavior of a man who heard that his soon to be wife was poisoned, his children were murdered, and that he had no more offspring to carry out his legacy? This man goes by the name of Jason. Jason was a selfish man. He placed his own pride and well being above his loved ones. He betrayed his ex-wife, Medea, (whom he was married to for many years) for another woman.…
With the World Health Organisation (WHO) statistics showing that a person commits suicide every 40 seconds, South West Regional Health Authority chairman Anil Cosine says it is especially important for religious leaders to be trained to spot mental health problems. At a training session on Psychological and Mental Health First Aid for pundits and temple leaders, Cosine also revealed that the average suicide rate in T&T was 13 per 100,000 people. As leaders, he said they interact with people regularly to assist with a variety of problems. With the SWRHA being the large region in the country, it is projected that 1,200 people will be seeking psychiatric treatment this year.…
“‘If freedom is what you desire, prove your knowledge,’ replied Ijnala. He then proceeded to recite a mathematical problem that would have been too complicated for most men to even begin to understand. However, I, Odysseus the wise, was able to keep track of every piece of information. “After moving around many variables and simplifying, I came to the conclusion that the question was unsolvable. Remembering Athena’s warning, I figured that this was his way of deception.…
The subject of medical care has been a very controversial subject since the beginning of time, physician assisted suicide is no exception. Although not as temperamental as in previous decades, this subject tends to be mentioned in many heated professional and family of the terminally ill’s family arguments. This topic is so controversial because many people that are against assisted suicide religiously fuel their arguments, saying that no one should interfere with Gods decision as to when a person should die. Physicians and family members that are in favor of assisted suicide say that it is a compassionate way to allow people who are in pain and close to death, a proper alternative to their suffrage and alleviates health care debt.…
“Socrates is a doer of evil, and corrupter of the youth, and he does not believe in the gods of the state, and has other new divinities of his own” (Apology, 5). Clearly Socrates was not admired by the one who spoke these words. Although Socrates was admired by many, the poor reputations of the sophists combined with Socrates’ disbelief in the Athenian gods led to the city fearing and mistrusting philosophy, ultimately prompting Socrates’ downfall. The city of Athens feared and generally mistrusted philosophy.…
Plato’s Phaedo, which is also known as On the Soul, is a dialogue that recalls the events right before the execution of Socrates. Socrates, who was charged for atheism and corrupting the youth, is the protagonist of the philosophical discussion. Socrates never wrote any of his ideas down, but it was his student Plato who wrote many of his philosophies in works. Some of Socrates’s ideas that are considered his most important are in the Phaedo, including his three arguments for the immortality of the soul and his argument against suicide. The topic of death is especially prominent in this text, given the context of the story.…
Plato’s work, The Trial and Death of Socrates has been and still remains a compelling piece of writing in Western Philosophy. In The Crito, the laws are the main focal point in all of Socrates arguments against leaving the city of Athens. He outlines the beliefs that he lives by and because of those beliefs chooses to not go against them, lest he risk tarnishing his psyche and reputation. Even when the Socrates does not speak for the laws, it is evident from the dialog that upholding the laws of Athens are far more superior in his life, than his own life and children. This paper is structured to analyze the arguments brought forth by Socrates, under the voice of the laws and as himself, to reveal the loyalty he harbors for the city of Athens.…
To assess the validility and value of Herodotus' Historys there are multiple factors one must consider. Why did he write his works? ; who did he write them for and how did he gather his information? Though these questions are still the subject of debate among many scholars, it is fairly well accepted that more than two centuries passed before the past had been bound to any kind of chronology that was to be compiled in the writings of Herodotus(Finley 1986, 17). For his sources Herodotus gathered most of his information from oral traditions.…
In fact, the mathematician who is often called the first “true” mathematician lived approximately from 570-495 BC. He was none other than the mysterious Pythagoras of Samos. Pythagoras is one of the most famous mathematicians of all time, and yet we know very little about his life. Most of the…
Phi is the only number whose square is the same value as itself plus 1. The Pythagoras theorem states that: given a right-angled triangle, the square of the two shorter sides are equal to the square of the hypotenuse. This can be demonstrated by: Using the Pythagoras theorem and the properties of phi we can demonstrate how the Great pyramid might possibly be…
However, even though Socrates spent an extensive amount of time describing this ideology, Glaucon and the others were not entirely convinced of the argument. In an attempt to get his audience to understand his reasoning, Socrates decided to supply a more mathematical description because it is something the listeners were familiar with. Similar to how the philosopher must reach a conclusion by utilizing his knowledge of the Forms, “students of geometry, calculation, and the like…make their claims for the sake of the square itself and the diagonal itself, not the diagonal they draw, and similarly with the others.” (510c3-d7). With an expansion of this explanation, Glaucon is able to comprehend how “there are four such conditions in the soul, corresponding to the four subsections of the line: understanding for the highest, thought for the second, belief for the third, and imaging for the last” (513d8-e1).…
