The unconscious is the part of our minds where certain emotions or memories are inaccessible, thus making the person unaware of these hidden emotions and memories. They usually reside in the unconscious part of our minds due to the act of repression. Repression is the process in which the mind filters as well as suppresses memories, thoughts, desires, and other emotions as a defense mechanism. Therefore these thoughts, memories, etc. become part of unconscious mind. Occasionally these ideas escape, and this leads to the “return of the repressed”. When Parker uses the word “purports” he seems to be referring the misrepresentation of knowledge. When connecting Parker’s ideas with Foucault’s, it seems safe to safe to say that they are proposing that people are provided with false knowledge in order to control and construct social norms. A double bind in this scenario refers to when a woman is given two options within these misconceptions, neither of which are flattering options. The double bind therefore creates oppression for women as they are forced within these misconceptions and mistreatment and are unable to become empowered by either choice. For example, a woman if a woman partakes in sleeping with multiple people, she’s viewed unfavorably, often times called derogatory slurs by men.
