Professional Interview With Capizzo: Preparing Process

Improved Essays
Interviewing is a necessary skill for every profession. After conducting my own professional interview with Capizzo, I must evaluate my own skills based on my performance.
My strengths in conducting this interview were preparation, nonverbal delivery, and question asking. After having completed the background information and writing out all my questions I was extremely prepared for the interview. I have always been one to use gestures when I speak, and during my interview with Capizzo it was no different. My nonverbal delivery went smoothly because I was dressed appropriately and made good eye contact. I truthfully believe that asking my questions was my biggest strength. A few times during the interview we got off topic and strayed from my planned questions. During that time, it took me longer than I would have liked to formulate new questions for topics I had not considered asking about. I was unprepared in that aspect but I learned more than I was hoping to about the process of acquiring clients and working for a public relations firm. Also, my interpersonal skills were weak. I have never been good at small talk, and it really showed in this interview. Between questions I gave short and quick responses, I found myself over using the words cool and great to the point where I probably sounded uninterested in what Capizzo had to say. Overall, my interview experience with Capizzo was informative and beneficial for my future career. He gave me a new perspective on the public relations industry. The interview took place in the Skinner building and lasted about 30 minutes. Throughout that time, I learned about Capizzo’s career, the aspects of the industry he finds most challenging, and what advice he has for …show more content…
I believe that I can improve by first conducting less structured interviews with my family and friends where I have to think quick on my feet and keep the conversation flowing. In these interviews, the goal will be to have the interviewee take the conversation a different direction so I will have to create new questions of the top of my head. I think that working with people I am comfortable with will allow me to develop without fear of harsh judgement. My next step would be to move onto to conversations and interviews with people I am less comfortable with such as professors and TAs. The repetitive nature of my plan will allow me to increase my confidence. Through these interviews, conversations and discussions, hopefully I will develop an interveiw flow and style that will allow me to prosper in situations where I am interviewing and being interviewed. In later assignments, I can use this plan to strengthen my stories because I will have better interviews to draw information
