On July 29th, 1961, Lady Diana Spencer said 'I do' at St Paul's Cathedral and became the 10th woman in 680 years to take the title, Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales.
Previous to her was Mary, the wife of George V. She carried the title from 1901 to 1910 when she was escorted by her husband who was then Prince of Wales. Her dignity and devotion to duty earned her respect in every corner of the world. Not all Princesses of Wales were so liked and respected. Some were stupid. Some ugly and some slept around.
Joan of Kent married her cousin the Black Prince in 1361 and became the first Princess of Wales. She was the beautiful widow of an aristocrat. When the Prince married her she had five children

She wore very revealing clothing leaving very little to the imagination, and her behaviour was outrageous. It was even rumoured that she and Edward III, her future father in law had a lurid affair. Another rumour was that he had raped her.

She married Prince Frederick. the son of Caroline .and George II. Augusta was very immature. and frightened of marrying Frederick. because he had already had many mistresses, including his fathers. and his grandfathers. Kneeling before the King ,and Queen to receive their blessing. she retched violently. and was sick all over the grand carpet at their feet.
Augusta showed her immaturity by playing with dolls all her life. but gave Frederick nine children. and had a very happy marriage.One of her children became George III.
The next Princess of Wales was another German, Caroline. She married the then Prince Regent. son of George. Caroline was the worst Princess of Wales of all. Her vulgar ways were appalling. Her personal hygiene left a lot to be desired. and she was generally dirty. The Prince Regent was so repulsed at the thought of coming into contact with her on his wedding night he got as drunk as possible. In fact, her personal hygiene got so bad. she had to be lectured about it. The Prince Regent left her after 12 months for his mistress. They were never divorced.
Caroline went back to Europe. but returned when the Prince's Coronation took place. and demanded she is crowned Queen. Needless to say, she was ordered away from the main doors of Westminster Abbey with a flea in her
