Supporters of non-censored music such as artists argue that they will lose profit. Advisory labels that are used to tell parents that music has explicit content may not be sold in such stores such as Wal-Mart. (Holz) While although artists may feel as though they are loosing profits from giving warning labels to parents, artists voluntary label their products. Laws do not outlaw artists from making advisory labels mandatory. This leads to children being able to download and purchase any version of songs. Ultimately we are not protecting children from inappropriate language that could be avoided with mandatory advisory labels. Advisory labels not only help in the protection of the youth but label to parents as well what their children are listening to. This was used for the government to control the content that was being broadcasted. The 50’s were rise for music that contained context of sex and violence. In the 1960’s lyrical content was the main reason for music censorship. This act although may have interfered with arteritis thoughts it created positive outlooks for adolescents. With this bands such as The Rolling Stones changed the lyric of one song from “Let’s spend the night together” to “Let’s spend some time together” (Jones 76) It is important to maintain an understanding that youth look up to ideals such as those in bands. The government enacting laws to ensure context being controlled is important in the development of youth. Today there is a lack of censorship within music and music videos. With the lack of censorship this has been cause for more behavioral issues in younger age groups. According to Federal Communication Commission regulations, the broadcast of obscene, indecent and profane material may be unlawful.(Elkouby) Radio stations may be actually be violating their public interest obligation by playing music that shows sex, drug use, rap and other unlawful behavior. Although we do instill laws to try and protect the youth within the music industry there is a three-pronged test that obscene material must meet.
