The view of women and their importance/roles in society has changed over time. We can look back to movies or stories from different time periods and see examples of how women are treated and viewed, both from the male's point of view and the women's point of view. In the short story “The Chaser” the author John Collier pokes fun at the idea that the men in the story think that they can do whatever they want with women because their opinions don't matter as Alan considers changing Diana, his love, into who he wants her to be without her input. Showing crazy and unfair it is to treat this poor young lady as an object. The short story was written in a time period where women didn't have as many opportunities as men and were viewed as lower class. …show more content…
Alan wants it to have a girl, Diana who he is in love with fall in love with him. From this you can immediately see that Alan and the old man have no regard for Diana’s feelings or opinions. As the old man explains how the love potion works he says “...she will change altogether. She will want nothing but solitude with you.” Alan is considering changing Diana to fit what he thinks she should be. She doesn't even get ask what she thinks or feels on the situation, and considering that Alan needs a love potion is the first place I'm guessing that she isn’t even into him. The way that Alan and the old man go back and forth talking it seems like they view Diana more as an object the they can use and change without hurting anyone, but in reality they are talking about forcing someone to do something they don't want to do. “ If you are an hour late, she will be terrified…[Alan] I can hardly imagine Diana like that!” Implying she doesn't like him that much “You will not have to use your
