As I compare the systematic approach the Plainville Community Schools engaged in to support district improvement, I noticed similarities in the desired student outcomes to my district. Whether it is through shared leadership, such as a PLC model or through a more typical top-down hierarchy, leadership is needed to provide a structure for the vision of the educational organization. Teaching staff benefits by realizing there is a vision or plan as the organization works with students year after year. As a current staff member, it is my opinion that implementing shared leadership has the potential to improve the low morale among the teaching staff and other leaders within the school. The first step, developing a shared vision at the helm of the leadership, which constitutes three members, is critical for developing needed cohesiveness among the teachers and instructors.…

One such style observed during school leadership team meetings was the distributive style of leadership. For many educators the thought of attending a professional development session conjures up dread and the idea of wasting time that could be spent in the classroom teaching. Teachers have to be willing to accept change and approach them with a respect for continuing their education of strategies to implement into their classrooms. “While the end result of all education reform should be student improvement, every reform initiative, if it is to succeed, must being with recognition of the importance of teachers in raising student performance”(Harwell, 2003). “For academic staff to be committed to process of improving their teaching, we anticipated that they would have to be convinced of the meaningfulness of the process for their own practice, so that it would be experienced as more than a technicist ritual of compliance” (Bozalek et al, 2014). Professional development that is designed and presented in a positive learning environment for teacher learning will increase teacher knowledge and in turn increase their level of content and curriculum knowledge.…
