Dare to be Different? This ad for the Guess perfume “Dare” features three slim models against what seems to be a sunny beach or tropical background. The three women would be considered conventionally attractive; they have long hair, full makeup, and semi-revealing clothing also from the brand Guess. Despite being an ad for perfume, the bottle of it is less focused on than the aesthetics of the models. The intended audience should be, given that it was found in a ‘Teen Vogue’, the 13-29 year old girl demographic, however, the ad is seen heavily through the lens of the male gaze. The models are very thin, the clothes and poses emphasising this even further, and they appear beautiful, but like parts before people. Open back shirts, corsets, heavy makeup and demure expressions are all things noticed before the actual product being advertised. Tucked snugly in the back pocket of a perfectly framed pair of short shorts, is the bottle of “Dare” itself. …show more content…
It creates a separation between them as people, and as props to look good and sell a perfume the viewers don’t need to care about as a legitimate product. The purpose of “Dare” being in a magazine aimed at teenage girls, seen through a tacky lens, is so girls will internalize the contents as what will make them attractive, what will make them high fashion, what will make them seen, while still providing uncomfortable eye candy for the average, unaware guy to view.
