Personal Statement: A Career In Marine Biology

Decent Essays
Ever since I was little I wanted to have a job that would have me around marine mammals all the time. My career choice started as me wanting to be a dolphin trainer at SeaWorld but as I matured and learned I wasn’t going to be physically able to do that I decided to become a marine biologist. I got that idea from my big brother who wanted to do the same thing but he wanted to specialize in studying marine mammals. I’ve always been curious why dolphins can become trained so easily, and how their brains process information. I plan on getting my major in marine biology and my minor in environmental science. Science in general is my strongest area in school so I know that going to school for a career in science wouldn’t be that difficult for me.

The smell of formaldehyde didn't hold me back, to dissect a preserved frog to learn about frog's internal organs. As the human and frog have similarity in their organs' layout. As we age so do our wants, needs and interests, morphing new ideas and dreams that we wish to chase down. I for instance came into the world believing I was capable of being the first black President, but seasons change, years pass and a young idealistic black boy grows with more realistic and achievable expectations.…

Marine biology has always been a passion of mine ever since I first heard about it when I was four years old. My family has a deep-running connection to the ocean so when they realized how interested I was in science, they suggested marine biology. I loved the concept of studying unknown creatures that sit miles below the surface of our planet that no human has ever seen. I’ve read many textbooks and field guides over the years, which started as an amusing pastime. However, the more I read, the more I became completely and utterly engrossed in the subject which eventually shaped me into what I am today.…

My perspectives and life completely changed when I was accepted into Bioscience High School. Being admitted was a huge achievement because the application and interview process was rigorous. One of the requirements for the application was to create a binder portfolio that would represent my worth ethic and what I could offer to the school. Now, I have experienced what it is like to be part of the Bioscience community. At first, the teaching methods and their curriculum was difficult to adjust to because their constructivist ways of teaching was different from the traditional way of education I had been in all of my life.…

Dolphins have also demonstrated evidence of problem solving in variety of hunting strategies that are devised by members of their community, and they transmit to the next generation (White, “What 's it like to be a Dolphin?” pp190). Just like humans, they evolve from generation to generation, teaching younger generations and those generations teaching the…

It has been 11 years, but that picture of a heart drawn by my biology teacher when I was in 8th class is still crystal clear in my mind. As the teacher explained about heart 's function, I was so astonished to see how splendidly our body worked, and it drove me to explore more and more about it and motivated me to choose biology as my subject in high school. In the first year of medical school that interest of exploring the human body forced me to study anatomy inside out, but till now it has been just that curiosity to know the human body. Then with the start of rotations at hospital I started to gain interest in patient care and started correlating all knowledge I gained with the disease process. As I tried to understand the spectrum of normal,…
