Personal Narrative: Varying To Leave

Decent Essays
My people are terrified to leave. We all want a chance like America people. We want freedom like Americans, We want a great education, we want a better home, we want a better life, but we cant because we are terrified to be hurt to get sent out.
We once weren’t terrified. I could go out to the park and to public, go to school without being terrified. I used to have American friends. We would laugh, talk, hangout and make funny memories but everything changed in one day. Our “friends” now stare us down, post things such as “lets build the wall”, get those foreigners out”, “time to get them out of here.” I’m terrified of losing people I love; I’m terrified to see people I love leave.

While working for a startup, micro-sized accounting firm founded by my wife’s uncle, I found myself with the responsibility of leading the organization’s payroll service. In such a setting, this duty encompassed virtually all facets of business functions including sales, developing uniform system processes, managing information technology, nurturing client relations, and completing the payroll operations just to name a few. The company at that point grew from a single client having two employees to around 50 clients and a total of approximately 6,000 employees within a single quarter. Such growth paired with the lack of payroll-experienced employees within the organization led to a high stress environment fueled by crunched deadlines and on-the-job learning that usually led to serious error. Our team would find that in order to stay ahead of the deadlines from week to week, we would often need to work 50+ hours each week.…

Most humans do not possess the strength to separate fears from logic and compassion. Fear, in itself, is something that can take over the human mind in ways that other emotions cannot. If we look back anytime during history, we can see populations committing atrocities that violate the very core values of humanity which makes us wonder “How can someone ever think or do something like this?” What many men and women fail to realize is they too may also do the same exact action if put into the shoes of citizens living in that moment. The common man could say easily that Hitler was a horrible human being but the common folk themselves elected him into the positon of a leader, allowing him to carry out his mass genocide.…

Decision is the word I chose to explain my experiences of how I became and who I am. I want to be different from my brother, uncles and the rest of the family. I want to be an example for my Dad and Mom, even if my decisions are hard to take, because I can remember the first conversation with my Mom about dropping out of school and explaining why I have to do that, how I was going to deal with that decision and asking her to support my decision so she can help me explain it to my Dad. It is the morning of July 4th, 2008: I groan as my mother gently whispers, “teneshi yene mar (Get up honey)”. Struggling I open my eyes and notice the trembling cabin, I turn to my mother with a look of concern and she reaches out her hand and squeezes my own looking up at me, “we are going to be okay Mar”. A couple of moments later our plane has landed, we gather up our belongings and make our way towards the exit filled with people attached to their screens and MP3 players. The airport is filled with an undercurrent of anticipation, impatience, and boredom; bodies scramble back and forth from one gate to another. My mother, attempting to balance three children, clasps my hand, holds my little brother to her waist and calls back to my older…

The Lesson in Quitting For the past 7 years of my life, swimming has played a huge role. Growing up, I had always enjoyed being in the water, and was one of the odd kids that genuinely enjoyed swimming lessons, no bribes required (thinking about it, I wish I had some of those kids in the lessons I teach now). Overtime, it began to feel less like a passion and more like an obligation; something I had committed to that was too late to stop. I was afraid to quit, afraid to disappoint, and trying to be dedicated to a sport I had lost interest in made me start to hate it. This year, I finally decided to drop the sport, and am now embracing the huge change it has had in my life.…

Throughout my childhood, they constantly told me their stories when they arrived in this country, and the fear they possessed being in a foreign land. I remember my mother telling me there was a time she wanted to return home because she struggled to speak English, but her family convinced her to stay. Her sisters and cousins had arrived in the U.S. a couple of…
