How Has Culture Shaped Me In My Culture Essay

Jawaharlal Nehru, the Prime Minister of India once said, “Culture is the widening of the mind and of the spirit.” In his quote, Nehru is discussing how culture helps open people’s minds. Each person in the world has their own distinct culture with beliefs, customs, and attitudes that shapes their identity and view of the world. My cultural beliefs have shaped me into a person that views family as the most important thing in the world. In the late 1980s, both of my parents left their home country of Mexico, and came to America in hopes of better lives. Throughout my childhood, they constantly told me their stories when they arrived in this country, and the fear they possessed being in a foreign land. I remember my mother telling me there was a time she wanted to return home because she struggled to speak English, but her family convinced her to stay. It is related to culture because each person of the U.S. has the civic responsibility to protect the rights of each person, no matter their beliefs. By doing so, the tensions between different groups of people can end. Unfortunately, racial issues still exist in our current society. Being raised a Mexican-American, I’ve seen stories on the news about discrimination towards minority groups. I’ve become involved by posting on social media the importance of ending discrimination. I also marched in a movement earlier this year that to brought to light the importance of immigrants and their rights in our country. I believe everyone should have equal rights. However, Thomas Hobbes would disagree with my argument. He stated how man needs power, and that all men seek power over others. He would add that because man always wants to be better than one another, there could never truly be equal rights, and that it isn’t our responsibility to fight for
