Personal Narrative: My Nursing Home With Special Needs

Improved Essays
I was employed at a local nursing home at the early age of 18 and I became very attached to my residents as well as learned how to aide a variety of different people. I learned how to take care of residents that had physical complications as well as mental behavioral issues. I worked in a nursing home called Salt River Nursing Home which housed about 80 residents at a time. I worked in an area called the Special Needs Unit in which held about twenty patients that suffered from dementia or Alzheimer's. The residents were housed in an area that required twenty four hour watch, they were required to wear bracelets that made sure they didn't leave their area and at any given time I had twenty residents and pulled fourteen hour shifts several days

I have been working in a nursing home for a little over a year as a dietary aide and have witnessed many problems within the dietary department. The root cause to all of the problems in the dietary department is bad management from my former manager, Sara. Sara was the dietary manager whose job was to manage the kitchen staff, order food and supplies, and plan out meals and snacks for special events at the nursing home. Bad management existed in the kitchen because Sara gave overtime to her employees like it was candy. The kitchen was understaffed for the past couple of months and so the only way that Sara resolved this issue was to give out overtime.…

When I started working as a CAN, as well as volunteering in the health care field, I understood that the work involved included helping residents in activities of daily living. What I found out after I started working was how much of an impact the job makes on people. When I was volunteering to help a woman go grocery shopping I did not think much of it. However, when I came into her home and started putting her groceries away she started tearing up. I found out that she and her husband used to always go grocery shopping together and would later play a game that involved putting the groceries away.…
