Personal Narrative: Empire Island

I am awoken by loud voices and stomping above me. I sprint up to the top deck trying to discover what all the commotion is about. When I get there people are dancing, singing, and crying. I am confused before I see it. A beautiful green statue of hope. We had arrived in America. When the boat lands I am shoved onto the island and I look around in astonishment.
There are people from every nation here at this one place.

As the daughter of parents who love to travel, I’ve had the pleasure of travelling across Canada and America as well as a few other countries from a young age. I have visited the loud and bustling streets of Tokyo and the ethereal gardens in Kyoto, stood on the edge of the Grand Canyon, walked the strip in Las Vegas, and watch the sun set over the Atlantic Ocean in Martha’s Vineyard. Although I should be able to look back on a childhood filled with events and memories from trips, I find it difficult to recall most vacations without a visual prompt. When I flip through old family photo albums, I don’t recall much more than what is shown in their pages. The outdated clothing, the people, and the locations are seen in the images, and therefore…

Ellis Island I walked noislessly through the market, listening to the nearly silent whispers that were surrounding me. The daily conversations of the Polish citizens still consisted of the New World, even though Ellis Island has been accepting immigrants for over 62 years. It seems like an amazing place. A place where the streets are paved with gold, and poverty was a word that simply wasn't in the Americans vocabulary. Ellis Island was the “Isle of Hope,” and it was every person's dream to start off a new life there.…

I don’t think most people look back at their near death experiences and laugh, but I can’t help myself. Normally alligators would be danger enough, but the tide had different ideas. I had invited my friends Xavier, Henry, and Harrison on vacation to Kiawah, South Carolina. I’ve been going to Kiawah Island my whole life and I know the ins and outs of the island, one of which is the end of the island.…

As a child growing up in Rhode Island, the smallest state in the Union, the idea of a vast planet brimming with civilization and culture was more like something out of a fairy tale than it was reality. So, when my father announced that we would be leaving the country to go to Scotland, the home of his and my ancestors, my world began to expand at a rapid pace. This trip could not have been timed more perfectly. The summer of 2007 marked the end of fourth grade, my first year at Saint Mary Academy Bay View.…

Fripp Island is a very small island off the coast of South Carolina and myself and my family have been vacationing there since the summer I was going to be in third grade. We went with just my family. My mom, dad, and three sisters Allison, Stephanie, and Meg. I did not know what to expect because I have never been there before but my mom did show us some pictures of the island and pictures of the house we would be staying at for the week. It all started off with the car ride there.…

After anxiously waiting about fifteen minutes, our waiter arrived with three beautiful plates. He set down my plate exposing my eyes to three buttermilk pancakes perfectly placed together with a layer of fresh strawberries and a tower of fluffy whipped cream in the middle, sprinkled on top were small bits of nuts and powdered sugar. All I needed now was syrup but what syrup would I choose if there all sounded so good; From Original to Guava to Coconut to Honey Macadamia Nut to Honey Christmas Berry or Honey Rainbow Blossom. My older sister, a cousin, and I had decided we would be taking a summer trip to Honolulu, Hawaii.…

To many Long Island is just a name or a place on the map, but to me this lovable fish-shaped island is home.
