Personal Narrative: Breast Cancer Service

As I motioned for the pink fire trucks to park in the middle of the pink-themed festival, I could not help but feel pride in what the team and I had been able to accomplish. After months of planning, designing, and promoting; Naperville, Illinois was about to witness their very first Guardian of the Ribbon fundraiser for breast cancer survivors. Cheering and supportive crowds gathered around the stage set in front of the fire trucks as those who had been afflicted with breast cancer shared brave stories about their roads to recovery. It was during this time that I began to reflect on my own journey and how service had become such an important aspect of my life.
My first experience with service was at a church fundraiser when I was seven years old. I was volunteered by my parents to help out during the dinner portion of the event as a food runner bringing heaping plates of pasta and meatballs to tables scattered throughout the Church hall. Service proved to be a rewarding experience, and one that I desperately wanted to do again. I

The perfect opportunity soon presented itself when I was asked to volunteer for a fundraiser for Breast Cancer survivors through the Guardian of the Ribbon Foundation. Adhering to my new resolution I went to the meeting, and all my fears about working with new people and new projects melted away as I finally realized that service is more important than my personal fears. Working with the Guardian of the Ribbon proved to be even more rewarding than all the other service projects I had been doing. The team and I was able to plan a pink celebration of survival and hope by listening and learning from one another. By stepping out of my comfort zone I was able to expand my service and successfully plan a fundraiser while also gaining great insight by interacting with different

San Francisco, CA – On the day of pink, where thousands walk 39.3 miles to raise money and awareness for breast cancer, a small group of individuals gathered around a heavy black wheelchair. Unlike the thousands that covered miles and miles for their cause, these individuals will cover 5 kilometers, 5 important kilometers; these kilometers are some of the most meaning full steps that these individuals will take. Standing around the wheelchair, they are waiting for a very important participant named Caliah. Caliah is a happy and active 10-year-old, much like every other child her age, she plays Pokemon Go and has a fixation for cartoons, she laughs and giggles at jokes, and she much like all kids her age wants to be the center of attention.…

I have chosen Cancer as my favorite constellation because it is the sign I was born under. Latin for "crab", it is the dimmest of all the zodiac constellations and used to be the Sun's most northerly position in the sky. It is located in between Gemini (to its west) and Leo(to its east). It is best known among stargazers as home of Praesepe, an open cluster. Cancer is most well known in Greek mythology as the crab sent by the goddess Hera to help the hydra kill Heracles.…

Thank you for your presentation regarding the Triage Consulting Group yesterday at USC. Again, I want to reaffirm my interest in the Associate position at the firm. Throughout my college career I have always wanted to take part in an organization where I am able to balance my knowledge of society, my passion for working with people, and interest in healthcare. It’s been rather surprising that an organization like the Triage Consulting Group to come along, and it’s an amazing opportunity to put my professional and personal skills to great use and further develop my interest in all aspects of healthcare. As I mentioned during the career fair, I have a diverse background in public service, community outreach, management and communications.…

Coming from a poor country, have exposed me to incalculable difficulties many people suffered every day in life due to economic circumstances. People who live in grievous conditions are all around the globe and even domestically. Foremost reason why, since high school all the way through college, I have always been involved in several clubs available and specialized in my career choice or in helping the community. Some of them are Pre-nursing and Physical Assistant Club, Student Government Association, as well as Phi Theta Kappa. These clubs offer the chance of working with and assisting people of all ages while acquiring leadership skills and teamwork strategies.…

Serving as Theta Iota Chapter President sharpened my leadership skills and taught me to engage those around me through positive encouragement. Before my term I assumed that projects always go as intended—volunteers are on time, organizations are cooperative, and ideas flow smoothly into reality. While this is ideal, the actuality is that difficulty can arise at any moment and people often need support. During our Chapter’s annual “Day of Service,” we organized over 100 volunteers to engage with Tucson non-profits throughout a single day. Unfortunately, the event started poorly: the member bringing breakfast suffered from a flat tire, the microphone shorted, and one of the non-profits had to cancel their event.…

Specific Purpose: To inform my audience of the opportunities St. Jude Up Til Dawn can offer students that choose to participate in the organization on their campus. Central Idea: St. Jude isn’t all about children suffering in pain, just like Up Til Dawn isn’t all about only raising money. Both offer so much more than just medicine to treat children.…

As a member of the Inside Ride Organizing Committee at Mentor College, I assisted to organize, advertise and execute the 2015 Inside Ride cycling event that raised over $50,000 for childhood cancer patients and advancing research. The Inside Ride is an annual fundraising event that my school, Mentor College, has every year in memory of a student who passed away battling cancer in 2010. Having known that student, I felt a deeper connection to the cause and and joined this committee to help raise awareness for childhood cancer and contribute to the success of this event. The event took several months of planning to ensure that everything would run smoothly. I was a part of the fundraising subcommittee, in which my role was to organize the paperwork required for the event and count the money prior to the event.…

We all have disparate opinions about the way someone looks, talks, or dresses. For example, Anna, my sister is usually looked at through a repulsive angle. She is looked at this way because of her congenital birth defect, spina bifida. When I look at Anna, I see a passionate individual who has managed to constantly battle challenges that have been placed in her life. Although, the story I intend to tell is who Anna really is, and what we have done for each other.…

Thousands of individuals are in the same ring as my father fighting their cancer, so anything that I can do to help this battle brings us all closer to knocking out the disease. Ever since the diagnosis, I have thrown my energy into service-oriented clubs and organizations. At my school, I am one of the presidents of the B+ club, an organization that raises funds for families fighting pediatric cancer and cancer research. One of the main events of the club is the student-run annual volleyball tournament; these past few years for the tournament, I have helped create and organize our care package program where we give “care packages,” filled with games, candy, blankets, and more, to about twenty kids with cancer. Additionally, I assisted one of my classmates in her Leukemia and Lymphoma Society Student of the Year campaign.…

My March to End Cancer Though I never knew Robert Cunningham personally, I know the terrible effects that cancer has on a family, as I lost my grandfather to cancer in 2009. From a very young age, I was encouraged by my family to "be my own person," and in a sense to "march to the beat of my own drum." In the fall, I plan to attend Western Kentucky University and double major in science and math education and middle school science through the SKyTeach program. Though my "march" is not biomedical research, nursing, or medicine, I believe that I can still serve to impact the battle against cancer through several methods. Cancer Research Funding Organizations like Relay for Life and St. Jude's Partners in Hope are instrumental in the research of cures for cancer.…

It was a balmy ten o’clock on a Saturday morning in June; the thick air around the Humane Society smelled vaguely of livestock. Stepping into the air-conditioned chill of the shelter, I took a breath, signed in to the volunteer portal, and took my place at the front desk. On this particular day the first people waiting were an older couple, and my heart sank when I saw them. The husband had a bundle in his arms, something wrapped in an old comforter, and I had worked the front desk long enough to know what that meant. Sure enough, as they approached, the blanket shifted and I saw, as I knew I would, the white muzzle and emaciated face of a dog in the decrepit last stages of old age.…
