Personal Narrative: My Constellation Of Cancer

Improved Essays
I have chosen Cancer as my favorite constellation because it is the sign I was born under. Latin for "crab", it is the dimmest of all the zodiac constellations and used to be the Sun's most northerly position in the sky. It is located in between Gemini (to its west) and Leo(to its east). It is best known among stargazers as home of Praesepe, an open cluster.

Cancer is most well known in Greek mythology as the crab sent by the goddess Hera to help the hydra kill Heracles. The crab was easily killed by Heracles during the battle and Hera, feeling bad for the weak crab, put him up in the stars for his loyalty. However, in the Scriptures of Delphi, there is another version of the pathetic crab that puts him in a much better light then its more

The four elements: air, water, earth, and fire fought each other for the dominion of the world. After a millennium of fighting the four agreed upon a formal battle between champions from each element. 3 champions were chosen from the elements and the tournament began. The champions fought valiantly for their patrons, but one by one the champions died until the only ones that remained were Cancer, representing water, and Libra, representing Air. The truth is that Cancer and Libra were deeply in love, going against the laws restricting inter-elemental relationships, and one could not live without the other. When time came for the last battle, Cancer killed himself so his lover would live. Libra, distraught over his death, approaches all four elements and begins her tirade of fury. She yells at them for their quarreling and foolishness that brought only death and destruction. She goes on to describe how the 4 elements are just that, 4. One cannot rule over the other, for balance must be kept and after confessing her love about Cancer she took a knife and killed herself out of love, peace, and balance. The four elements realized that with the death of Libra, no champion survived leading to a draw. The four contemplated her words and decided that they will abide by her sacrificial request to rule in balance. Each element will have 3 months out of the year to rule. Before the first year began the

It also lies in the direction of the center of our Milky Way galaxy, and being in such a dense part of the sky is packed with many interesting astronomical objects worth observing. 2.…

My favorite constellation is Scorpius ("The Scorpion") due to the fact that I am a Scorpio (my birthday is November 15th). Scorpius is the southernmost constellation out of all the Zodiac constellations and is near the center of the Milky Way. Also, the red star, Antares, is located where the Scorpion's heart is supposed to be. The star is red because it should be going out soon. The Scorpion's heart may either turn into a black hole (which many describe our hearts to be like) or a new star.…

I have chosen the Andromeda constellation as my favorite because I have always loved the story of Andromeda. The constellation is named after Princess Andromeda, bride of Perseus from Greek mythology. She was used as a sacrifice to save her kingdom from a dreaded sea monster sent by Poseidon. She was rescued by Perseus who slew the beast. In mythology, Andromeda was the daughter of Cepheus and Cassiopeia, king and queen of the North African kingdom of Aethiopia.…

Hydra is the largest constellation recognized by the International Astronomical Union, it stretches from the south end of Caner to in between Libra, Centaurus and the Scales. I like Hydra because even though it is such a huge constellation, there isn't a prominent identifier, but when you do see it, it demands to be admired and you can't forget that it's there. In Chinese astronomy, Hydra contains three constellations within itself; Liu, Xing and Zhang. The myth behind Hydra ties into the myth of Hercules.…

My favorite constellation is the Cetus or 'whale' because I think it looks more like a frying pan than a whale. The Cetus is a constellation made up of 88 stars and the brightest star is called Deneb Kaitos. The Cetus is very close to the other zodiac constellations such as Aries, Pisces and Aquarius. The creation story of the Cetus constellation stems from Greek mythology. In this story the Cetus is called a Sea Monster and not a whale.…

I chose the constellation Draco for the reason that I just love dragons, as well as the myth behind the specific dragon that the constellation represents. That dragon is called Ladon, and he was a more serpent like dragon, with multiple heads, although stories disagree about how many exactly. The constellation is located in the northern sky, and is a circumpolar constellation, meaning it never sets below the horizon for many observers in the north. Hercules defeated Ladon on a quest to retrieve a golden apple from the tree Ladon guarded in the garden of the Hesperiedes.…

The constellation Andromeda is a famous constellation of the 88 modern contstellations. It was first discovered by a 2nd century BC Greco-Roman named Ptolemy. It is named after the Greek Princess Andromeda and is seen mainly in the Northern Hemisphere. The Greek myth of the creation of the Andromeda constellation begins with her Mother Queen Cassiopeia of Ethiopia and her Father, Cepheus, an Aethiopian king declaring to allthe land that their daughter was the most beautful creature on the planet. Even more beautiful than the Nereids, which are sea nympths blessed with immense beauty.…

I have chosen this stunning pattern of stars because I myself am i cancer as my horoscope and find it quite beautiful even though it is one of the dimmest constellations which can't be seen with the naked eye. But if you were to look for this lovely constellation you would be searching for an upside down Y right next to the constellations of Leo and Gemini. If you want to see this constellation the best and only time to see it in the northern hemisphere is in early spring and in the southern hemisphere in the autumn. the sign only comes out in these times because it is considered one of the four cardinal signs that signify the passage from one season to the next.…
