Personal Narrative: An Honorable Judge

Improved Essays
"Honorable Judge.." I began with a nervous smile.
I skimmed through the notes I had made during all those hours of research for the past two weeks. Sadly it was of no help; I had to say whatever came to my mind right then. This was debate after all. I glanced up, and caught the eye of my coach at the back. I hated disappointing the people who believed in me, and I knew my coach had more belief in me than I could ever muster.
I took a deep breath, and I started to speak. The topic was about how minority subcultures were being oppressed around the world. I started talking about oppression passionately, and then went on to outline all the reasons supporting this issue. There was no time to think twice before I spoke. I lost points every moment that I paused. I stopped counting down the seconds, and I continued to speak.
Finally, when the judge, also known as the adjudicator, raised his hand and motioned for me to stop, I was caught by surprise. Had I actually managed to speak for several minutes straight? I wondered bewilderingly. My coach beamed at me, and I knew I had really done it.
They say that there are certain instances in life which change your perspective and beliefs in one single moment; I think this was mine.

I was chosen as a prefect in Grade 12 for the Youth Development Club, where the students participate in a prestigious international program called the Duke of Edinburgh's International Award. My main job as a prefect is to conduct weekly meetings with over a hundred students, and aid them in recording their activities for this program. I remember my first ever meeting where I was hesitant to speak up and introduce myself in front of all of the students and member teachers. However, my nervousness stemmed with time because I forced myself to focus on the bigger picture - the club had to go on no matter how nervous I

When I think about my personal code of ethics I think of the golden rule. Treat others how you would want to be treated. I have had lots of customer service experience which transfers to helping patients. You need to have people skills, good communication skills and all. The way I would bring my code of ethics into my profession would be to respect my co-workers, the patients and anyone I would come in contact with in the professional setting.…

It was a small court room, and the room was filled with all sorts of people. I think there were some that was there for court and some were there to hear someone’s sentencing. There was a banner you could see as you walked in at the front of the room that said” Show up, Be honest, and Try”. To my left of the court room there was a jury box with people in it, I thought there was a trial going on, but actually there were two people in orange and I believe the other people were counselors for their program.…

Last summer, I worked near the US District Court in Hartford and often stopped in to watch hearings and bench trials. As Political Science and Philosophy of Law student, I had read about the workings of the American justice system, but I had never actually seen it up close. In many ways, it was exactly as I expected: I knew who played which roles in the proceedings, I understood most of the legal terms, and I had usually read the facts of the case and procedural history on PACER before the hearing. One thing I did not know to expect, however, was the remarkable professionalism, curtesy, and preparedness the Assistant US Attorneys. I knew that AUSAs were talented lawyers and that their positions were highly competitive, but their quick and…

Then a hood covered my head. “Don’t make it harder for us,” the hangman whispered. The hood was as dark as a funeral scarf, I kept on hoping that they would distinguish me, that they would stop the hanging and free me. I got to know that there was no hope, when the countdown began.…

Outside of the electronic systems I feel that any court official helps make the court run efficiently. If I had to choose one individual I would chose a court administrator to be the one who has a high impact. My reason being is they are the eyes and ears for pretty much everything. These individuals are the ones who schedule trial dates and handle a majority of the official paperwork. The court administrator I feel is like the middle man to everyone.…

If I were on the U.S. Supreme Court, I would decide Supreme Court cases based on common law, and not on my own personal beliefs. I would say I would be an activist and rule cases based on provided evidence and facts. Since the Constitution was written, the world has changed, and needs to be revised with different issues at hand in the present times. The “right to privacy” was not in the Constitution, but over the years established that the right to privacy is a basic human right. The court should at times make new necessary policy changes to uphold justice, as long as it doesn’t violate the Constitution.…

When I first finished high school, I thought I was finished with English. English was not one of my strongest subjects or well, I thought it was not. Being able to get away with procrastination, I felt like I did not need to worry much about it. I was wrong to do so, and English 104 open my eyes to how much work I really need. Leaving everything to the last minute limited a lot of things, for example the revision of each piece, I did not get that done until maybe Thanksgiving break.…

I am smart in appearance, sociable and well-respected by my teachers and peers. I interact with lots of people in different years each day, so I feel that if I became a prefect I would be approachable to pupils from year groups younger than me and I always try to have a friendly smile on my face. I would work well with other prefects, as I have always been a keen team worker. In Year 9, a few other pupils and I were given the opportunity to go out of school and take part in The BAE Systems Make It Enterprising Challenge. At this event, I learnt to use my team-building skills and it helped me to build my…

I have always been taught to judge people based on their actions rather than their appearance, and this was a lesson that was completely reinforced by the house I lived in, in which I grew up. As kids, if any of us even remotely suggested that we were focused on someone 's looks, we were immediately punished and reminded that there is no way to know a person based on what he or she looked like, but rather it is important to know the heart inside the body. Making snap judgments based on appearance was definitely not acceptable in our household. This was difficult for kids, since young people often judge people based on first impressions, which generally involve their physical appearance. Nevertheless, as an adult, it became as clear as day to…

A few weeks ago, I found myself on the second floor of the North end of the Unity Health Hospital, dressed in the nicest button-up shirt and dress pants I own, shaking so hard that my folder, which held my resume, cover letter, two pens, notebook paper and a cheesy motivational quote stuck to the inside cover, nearly fell out of my hands. My first job interview was an experience that I will never forget. My anxiety reached the point of exacerbation during the fifteen minutes that I spent in the empty lobby. I had intentionally arrived fifteen minutes earlier than my appointed time and was only accompanied by my own thoughts, which were fraught with worry. Had I arrived too early?…
