Onika Tanya Maraj, who is famously known as Nicki Minaj, was born in Trinidad and Tobago and moved to New York with her family at the age of five. Her father also lived with her who was a severe drug addict and had a very violent past. He even attempted to kill Nicki’s mother by setting fire to the family house but it failed. After all the struggle she has been through, she said in an interview, “I've always had this female empowerment thing in the back of my mind because I wanted my mother to be stronger, and she couldn't be. I thought, 'If I'm successful, I can change her life.’” This is one of the main reasons Nicki Minaj chose the life of being a rapper and then eventually being the best at it. Within a short period of time she managed to receive the fame that she currently has. Many of her recent videos and songs have been termed controversial by different age groups. One of her most talked about videos was ‘Anaconda’ that was released in 2014. The video contains a lot of explicit content that shocked audiences from around the world. As she had said she is all for female empowerment, she conveys her messages through nudity and bright colours. Upon the release of this hit single, it had mixed reviews from many music critics. They praised her for the production of this song and her return to the roots.
