Are non-conformists rebels or people trying to progress the world? Non-conformists reject mainstream culture and join a counter-culture. There are many non-conformists groups like the homosexuals, artists, Goths, and cat people who are thought of as rebellious by other people that don't agree with the ideas of the counterculture. However stories of nonconformists helping society have made it clear that non-conformity is helpful and enhances society. When people reject mainstream culture, they are trying to improve the world or are helping one another by providing a safe haven that is free of the criticism of mainstream society.
Non-conformers can offer a safe haven for people who are different, oppressed, or are treated badly by others for their differences. In 2014 a young girl in Colorado shaved her head to support a friend who was being bullied because she had lost her hair due to chemotherapy treatment for cancer. The school said that the friend couldn't go to school because her hair style violated the dress code. The friend became a nonconformist by shaving her head to help another. Galileo was a famous scientist during the time of the Scientific Revolution. He challenged the Catholic church's idea that the sun and planets revolved around the Earth and provided data to support the correct theory that the planets revolved around the sun. For his statements, Galileo was given house arrest. As an early nonconformist, Galileo went against the mainstream Catholics with an idea that made them uncomfortable.
