In a non-profit organization, volunteers are the key component to ensuring continued viability. A unique attribute of Non-Profit Organizations is that they depend heavily on their volunteer workforce. Essentially, Non-Profit Organizations must assure the proper and sustained functioning of their organization through the efforts of the volunteers, but at the same time the volunteers lack instrumental means, such as money and job security (Boezman & Ellemers, 2008; Grube and Piliavin, 2000). As such, the organization must rely heavily on the volunteer spirit and motivation ensure the organization can meets its mission. By ensuring that volunteers are properly motivated and have a since of ownership within the organization, Non-Profit Organization are able to establish a since of loyalty in the volunteers.
