The title of this post might seem confusing for those who know me, as it is no secret that I do not personally tie a sense of masculinity to wearing a specific color. That being said, I should probably clarify; real men do not exist, so of course real men do not wear pink. The reason I am writing this is to illustrate another of the lies so many of us are ready to believe. Think about the word “real” in the middle of the statement.
When people use the phrase “real men don’t [insert thing here]” they are using a classic logical fallacy called the No True Scotsman fallacy. This is one of my personal favorite fallacies and one I see a lot of in my work. This of course is done to dock the man on the receiving end of the fallacy of his man points and nudge the sender higher on the hierarchy. Keep in mind generalizations about people are usually flawed to begin with because of the complex and socially constructed nature of the human experience.
